Dark Paladin

Substitoad strikes me as a reasonably solid card, that does something fairly well, for a Decktype that doesn't need it...at all...and, furthermore, I highly doubt anyone is playing a Frog Deck in this Format.

Let's go over some things:

*2000 defense IS a good thing

*Frog monsters (minus Frog the Jam) can't be destroyed by Battle *you can tribute 1 monster you control to Special Summon 1 Frog monster from your Deck (minus again, Frog the Jam)

Those are good things, but...

Let's go over some other things:

*Your Frogs can't be destroyed by Battle, but they can still be destroyed by Monster, Magic, and Trap effects, as well as be removed.

*as good as that 2000 defense is, it isn't going to last forever

General Zorpa Substitoad

Wow they had fun with the names in this set. This little guy might make the frog theme almost good. You can tribute him to Special Summon a Frog monster from your deck. Meaning that Des Frog just got a whole lot easier to play, and then Des Croaking for the game. His second effect is almost as good as well, no frog monsters can be destroyed in battle. Meaning that Unifrog and Des Frog get to stick around and do their thing.  He is not a frog himself, so he will not protect himself, but with 2000 DEF he will seldom need to except against big guys.

It is too bad then, that Frogs have no bigger monster than 1900 (Beelze Frog does not count, as he needs T.A.D.P.O.L.E to be effective). He is probably one fo the best support monsters in the game, but his similar cousin, Lonefire Blossom, takes precedence over him because of the fact that the plant theme has some big beaters in Fairy King Truesdale and Gigaplant. So UDE, give us a big beater frog, because I want to play a competitive frog deck!

Substitoad

One step at a time.

100 attack: If this is in attack mode, it better be because you're tributing it. At least its searchable.

2000 defense: Very respectable, can hold off anything that wasn't special summoned or tributed for. Solid.

Effect: Summoning from the deck is always a plus, but one has to look over the number of useful Frogs in the game to give the effect a fair chance. Its a short list, lemme tell ya.

Aqua/Water: A powerful combination, actually. Water has several methods of reusing or recycling cards, and Aqua... Wetlands. Need I say more?

Now then, this card is seeing some interest from two different perspectives, so I'll try to give them both a chance.

First, with Wetlands. Water/Aqua/Level 2 or lower monsters get a 1200 point boost to their attack. Thats... pretty darn respectable. Now granted, that only puts this little guy at 1300. Still, consider this: End your opponent's turn with Scapegoat. On your turn, drop Substitoad. Dig out your three Unifrogs and your Treeborn Frog. Laugh as your opponent dies to Frogs because they attack directly and can't be mowed down.

Scary, eh?

Second, OTK potential. A few people have considered loading an Exodia deck or the like with three of these guys and a buttload of Frogs. First time one of these guys hits the field with a buddy, you can strip every frog out of your deck at once. Thats thirteen cards gone in a flash! Beats the heck out of Toon Table of Contents set, now doesn't it?

Seriously, though. If you didn't draw a Substitoad in the first hand, you'd likely get hosed in bad draws for the rest of the game. Dangerous plan, and I wouldn't recommend it. The Wetlands design, however, looks pretty solid and highly amusing. Substitoad may well have created a new decktype all by itself.

Awesome.

Traditional: 2/5 (potential OTK material does give it some pull)

Advanced: 3/5 (proud creator of a potential tier 2 decktype, basic design still needs help against the big boys though)

Pwii

substitoad is really good support for the new weird frog decktype. I have no idea why it doesn't like frog the jam, but this actually might see play in a monarch deck. MAYBE. I guess we'll just have to see.
