In what has apparently become Jump Promo week, we
come along to Beast King Barbaros, who is a Level 8
monster of the Earth attribute and also a
Beast-Warrior, which I'm sure surprises everyone
with 3000 attack and 1200 defense.
Now, Level 8 requires two tributes, obviously, but
you can also choose to Normal Summon or Set this
card without thir Tributing, and if you do, this
cards attack drops from 3000 to 1900. It can be
useful in a crutch I suppose, but then you have an
effectless monster on the Field with 1900 attack.
Secondly, you can tribute three monsters to summon
this card, and if successful, you destroy all cards
your opponent controls. Now, it's hard enough to
play a two tribute monster, and for 3000 attack
alone, you probably don't need to. This guy
obviously fits beautifully in Gladiator Beasts which
are as powerful and popular as ever.
It's nice to seem them receive a powerhouse in this
form, and they are a quick, strong, and heavy
hitting Deck that will get you, so enjoy playing
with him.

Beast King Barbaros
...
Another good monster here. Anything THIS strong with
no real limitations on getting to the field already
starts out ahead of the game. 3000 ATK is just
excellent. Earth - great. Beast Warrior - fine. But
his effect that allows him to be normal summoned
without a tribute, as i eluded to before is what
makes him special. Sure - he comes out with less
attack, but still - 1900 is nothing to sneeze at for
no tributes, and its a fair trade off for something
that will never be a dead card in your hand. And
speaking of "trade" - his 8 stars make him perfect
for Trade-in, if u want to dump/revive him. Not to
mention all the other little tricks to get him back
to optimal strength if he IS normal summoned sans
tribute (Royal Oppression, flip & reverse, Forbidden
Chalice, etc.) Many of them result in your opponent
running head first into a buzz-saw thinking they can
kill him at 1900 ... i've smacked into that buzz-saw
many times myself.
I tell ya - Barbaros is frightening ...

Its Wednesday, and we'll be looking at a rather
amazing card. Beast King Barbaros, a level 8 monster
that can be summoned without tributing monsters, but
its attack goes down to 1900, and if tribute
summoned by tributing 3 monsters, you can destroy
all cards your opponent controls. Post-Ancient
Prophecy, the card will only get better. Barbaros
made its debut in Jeff Jones' deck at SHONEN JUMP
Championship Anaheim, where the new Shonen Jump
Championship card was also debuted, Dark End Dragon.
Jeff Jones used Barbaros with Skill Drain to plow
through the competition and become the Shonen Jump
Champion of Anaheim, and Barbaros is still used in
many decks, mostly based around Skill Drain, that is
until Ancient Prophecy comes out. Future Vision is
one of the new cards to be released in Ancient
Prophecy, and its a Field Spell that removes a
normal summoned monster from play and gets returned
to the field during the controllers next Standby
Phase. This means with Barbaros removed and returned
to the field, its attack will go back to its
original stats. We may see this used in the future
with the Fortune Ladies. Barbaros has been used in
other decks as well, such as Plants. Since Lonefire
Blossom, Tytannial and Barbaros all benefit in some
ways even with Skill Drain out, the deck still
proves to be pretty good, even though the Dark Armed
version of Skill Drain with Barbaros is much better.
Barbaros is a card that can be used in many ways,
and cant go wrong with just about all of those ways.

Beast King Barbaros…One
of the most anticipated cards to be imported to the
US. As it is in its name, this card really is beast.
It can potentially be a no tribute 3000-attack
beaststick under certain circumstances. If Skill
Drain or a card with similar effect is not on the
field, Barbaros’ decreased 1900 attack is still very
solid. Either way, this card will give your opponent
fits and forces them to play at a faster pace.
Its secondary effect of Raigeki when tributing 3
monsters for summoning will scarcely see any play.
However, in beast decks that utilizes Nimbles and
Dandelion, will increase your chances of being able
to pull it off. But even then, you would hate for it
to run into a Bottomless. That said, you should
avoid using this effect if possible.
Definitely an awesome card that is made even better
with the release of Forbidden Chalice, which not
only brings it back to its original 3000-attack (if
it was at 1900 before), it gives it an extra 400
Barbaros is a card that is very misunderstood. When
Jeff Jones first used it in his Skill Drain deck, it
was an excellent metagame call designed to stop
Gladiator Beasts (which are weak to big beat
sticks).
So now I see builds of Plant Drain and Dark Drain
splash it in all over the place. Good move, right?
Wrong.
Barbaros is garbage now. I wouldn’t play him in any
deck, including builds that main three copies of
Skill Drain. All of the big decks run multiple
Bottomless and have numerous ways of getting around
3000 attack normal monsters.
In this current game state (due to broken design),
the attack score of a monster means next to nothing.
1900 is pathetic and 3000 through a two card combo
is not much better.
Exhaust every possible option in your Skill Drain
build before turning to Barbaros.
