Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Archfiend of Gilfer

When this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can activate its effect. You can then equip it to a monster on the field, and this card will be treated as an Equip Spell Card that decreases the ATK of the equipped monster by 500 points.

Dark Paladin
Thursday

As the week takes a bit of a turn for the better, we come to Archfiend of Gilfer, a card of Yugi's from the Battle City arc, that was in the anime named Beast of Gilfer...who is a Level 6 Fiend (shocking) of the Dark attribute with 2200 attack (meh) and 2500 defense (nice).

Archfiend of Gilfer, sadly, isn't the most playable of cards. 2200 attack for a tribute monster just isn't going to cut it, although it is higher than some popular tribute monsters. The impressive 2500 defense isn't going to win you any games either.

It does have the Equip. effect when sent to the Graveyard. You can Equip it to a monster on the Field and that monster loses 500 attack points. BUT this card hitting the Graveyard has to be the last effect to resolve.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1.5/5
Advanced: 2.5/5

Art: 5/5 Hell of a picture, it just needs to do more.
General Zorpa Archfiend of Gilfer

This is not a "classic" Archfiend like the 3 before it, but he can have his uses. He is one of the few "bomb" Archfiends that does not have the lifepoint payment effect, horrible side effects or the wierd summoning conditions. 2200 ATK and 2500 DEF are decent on a one tribute monster, as is the DARK Fiend stats, whcih allows him to feel at home with all of the other Archfiend stuff.

His effect is actually what might get him played. When he is sent to the graveyard, you get to equip him to a monster on the field and that monster loses 500 ATK. 500 is not so much, but it will bring Stardust Dragon in range of your little guys, which is good.

His effect also works with Armageddon Knight and such, as you can send him to the graveyard from anywhere to get his effect. This makes him a little bit better, as he can actually be used to get you out of any situations that might end up being bad for you battle-wise just to send him to the graveyard.

Archfiend of Gilfer …
Once upon a time I liked this card. I really did. But then something happened … people started quoting “rules” at me, and Gilfer gradually started losing his effectiveness. Namely – “The Last thing that happens” rule. Now someone correct me if I’ve been lied to all these years, but as much fun as the thought of continually attaching Gilfer to something on the field, it’s never ever that easy in Yu-Gi-oh, is it? 
This means his usefulness just got tanked because a 2200 ATK tribute monster is never a good idea unless he’s got some big tricks up his sleeve. Gilfer? - He cannot be dropped into the graveyard as a cost for a spell, say like Monster Reincarnation, to get his effect, because that’s “not the last thing that happens”. Thought u might sneak him into a Lightsworn Deck? – Cute, but it wont work as often would be worth the investment in finding room for him in the deck.

What u then have left is a 2200 ATK tribute Archfiend, with no LP cost, but if u WERE to successfully get his effect off (once or twice if you’re lucky) u can only reduce your opponent by 500 points. That’s not much as something in the ranks of a Monarch would only go down to 1900, and u would still need at LEAST your Archfiend Solider to even just suicide with it.
Does that SOUND like a good card to u?
