Dark Paladin
Tuesday

Emperor Sem continues this week, who is one of the ever popular Light-attributed Fiend-type monsters in the game, and Level 4 with a paltry 1300 attack and an impressive 2200 defense on a monster requiring no tribute.

Now, each time you tribute summon a monster, each player can return one card from their Graveyard to the top of thier Deck. It's an interesting little Rare, but not the most useful of cards. Believe it or not, you can play a pretty competitive Deck on powerful tribute monsters.

However, the big negative effect here is that while being able to recycle cards is usually good, it goes to the top of your Deck, as opposed to your Hand, and if that wasn't enough, your opponent can use that effect.

Emperor Sem …

Well, the only thing that makes this guy great are his stats … that 2200 DEF on a 4 star monster is just incredible. Virtually unbreakable in battle by anything that isn’t a tribute. Gladiator Beasts? Nope. Cyber Dragon? Nope. Blackwings? Nope. Lightsworn? Nope. So that’s nice. And the fact that he’s a Light Fiend is also kinda neat. Fiends have always been my favorite monster type, and those of the light variety are extra rare.

But then his effect? – Crappy, at best. Yesterday we looked at a card that allowed u to get something back from the graveyard (however, it was something a lot more specific, while Emperor Sem will let u grab ANYTHING), but it also came at a heavy price. Yesterday’s card – u sacrificed field presence as well as your normal summon for the turn (crap) Sem? – u sacrifice your draw phase by putting something on the top of ur deck. Albeit – it could be something GO OD that u want to use again, like a Monster Reborn. But your opponent then gets the same “benefit” that u do. And in order to even make ANY of this work, u have to be tributing stuff in FRONT of Emperor Sem … meaning u can’t tribute HIM himself … Sem has to stay present on the field. Then u have to have at least 1 more monster out so u can tribute it, and u can THEN start getting this lousy effect …

Nah, this is nothing more than semi-interesting junk. If it said "every time a monster was Tributed", or said "back to your hand", it would easily gain another star and half … but … nope!

We continue the week with Emperor Sem, a Light attributed Fiend-type monster with 1300 attack and 2200 defense. Pretty decent stats for a level 4. Each time you tribute summon monsters, both you and your opponent can add a card from their graveyard to the top of their decks. This can be helpful or hurt you in the long run. If your opponent puts something back that can set you back advantage wise, it will hurt you pretty bad. If you get something back that can only push your advantage over your opponent further, its a pretty awesome card. Being a Light attribute monster, its also something you can combo in some deck that uses Honest, who doesn't like a pumped up Light monster thanks to Honest?

The card probably fits into its own deck but it can cut off your draws by putting a new card on top of your deck when you want a specific card, and if your opponent puts a card on top while you dont, its putting you at risk of their card being what they need to win.

Parallel Fates Emperor Sem…. This should be the highest defense level 4 monster without a real drawback…unless count its effect working for your opponent as one. But honestly, this card will not see any competitive play outside from maybe stall-burn. Reason for that is due to the lack of tribute monsters being used in big tournaments right now. Monarch will definitely not waste a monster slot to use this.

Its effect while good, is fairly slow. Not only that, it could potentially end up being disastrous if your opponent returns a power/game-breaking card back to the top of their deck. This card would not be used alongside Skill Drain either, since if that was the case, there are better choice for defense cards.

Not a card, but not one that will see any play.

Today’s card up for review is Emperor Sem. One word for this card, and that is eww. I can’t remember a card that I ever liked that had a text including: “each player” in it. The game isn’t about tributing monsters anymore, so even if the text didn’t say all players, it still wouldn’t be playable. But hey, this card could see some play some day, it has a unique effect so maybe?
