Dark Paladin
Friday

Endymion, the Master Magician, the card I alluded to on Monday, a Dark attributed, Level 7 Spellcaster-type monster...is he the Master Magician? Well, there are Magicians with higher attack, and even better effects, but let's see how good (or not) Endymion is.

2700 attack on a Level 7 monster is about as high as I would expect...generally by the time you get to 2800 or higher, we're dealing with Level 8, and 1700 defense is a little low, but not terrible after all. Now, Level 7 means two tributes, but "Endymion" being the key word here...

You can Special Summon this card from your Hand or Graveyard by removing six Magic Counters from a "Magical City of Endymion" you control. When you do, add one Magic Card from your Graveyard to your Hand. So it allows you to retrieve a Magic Card from your Graveyard when Special Summoned in this way...

Sounds familiar...Dark Magician of Chaos? That on it's own makes this card a winner for Spellcaster players, but we have another very useful ability. Once per turn, (the once per turn adds balance to power) you can discard a Magic Card from your Hand to destroy one card on the Field...beautiful.

He's powerful (2700 attack), retrieves a Magic card, and can destroy other cards. He's almost the monster Spellcasters need.

Today’s card up for review is Endymion, the Master Magician. This card has potential, but I only have one deck in mind to where he is useful in. That is the new DDT deck. Don’t expect it to be amazing since Destiny Hero Malicious, Destiny Draw, and Allure of Darkness all went down to two per deck, and Reinforcement of the Army went to one per deck. You could call this guy Dark Magician Of Chaos’ cousin because of his effect. When he is brought out, you get to add a spell card from your grave to your hand, similar to Dmoc. There is an added bonus to it though. You can pitch a spell card from your hand to nuke a card on the field. It is kind of hard to drop him through citadel only because the draw cards in the deck got crippled. You still can use the ones I said earlier, plus 3 Upstart Goblin, Card Destruction, and Trade In. It is an inconsistent deck, but it can win sometimes. You could possibly try this out in a Spellcaster deck, but I am not sure Citadel would stay on the field long enough for you to get 6 counters on it.

Endymion, the Master Magician …

He’s got a solid enough ATK for a level 7 monster. DEF is a tad low, but we’ve seen a lot worse. The Dark Attribute rocks any way u slice it, so he’s got that for him. Spellcasters have a bunch of support now, especially with this structure deck coming out WITH Endymion, so that makes yet ANOTHER plus for him on his basic stats alone. Plus, there are no restrictions on summoning him. None of that Nomi crap.

Special Effect? – he’s got 3 of them. That means he’s gotta be great, right? … Well, let’s see. The 1st one allows u to special summon him from the hand or grave by removing 6 counters from the Citadel. Easy? – No. It’s not. It sounds like it should be easy enough to stack counters on the Citadel, but to actually get to the point of having 6 on it, and still NEED to bring out Endymion to help u – ur probably seriously getting ur butt kicke d at this point already, and ur opponent is likely just sitting and waiting with a counter measure for Endymion if/when he ever shows up. It’s not IMPOSSIBLE to get him out via this method, but it’s very bad game management if u are relying on it.

However, u NEED to do it like this in order to get his 2nd effect – to reclaim a spell from your graveyard. It's pretty nice, and shades of a Dark Magician of Chaos past … But again, it goes back to if u are ever able to employ the 1st method of special summoning him.

And lastly – his 3rd effect – dump a spell card to destroy 1 card on the field? – also pretty nice. But he’d be SUPER sweet if u can discard ANY card to destroy 1 card on the field. The downside to having to discard a spell specifically is that u are only playing with a finite amount of spells to begin with. Maybe 10-15, depending on your deck? And u are likely only playing with spells u actually NEED. Meaning often – u would rather use the Spell’s effect than dump it for Endymion8 0s effect. If u are pushing for the win? Then cool. Go for it. But by mid or end game if/when u actually HAVE Endymion on the field, your resources are gonna be so limited – having a disposable spell card in hand … or ANY spell card for that matter may be a luxury ur unable to afford.

Nah, sorry dawg …

Today we finish off the Spellcasters Command week with Endymion, the Master Magician. The decks head honcho. You can Special Summon it from the Graveyard by removing 6 Spell Counters from a Magical Citadel of Endymion you control and when its Special Summoned this way, you can add 1 Spell Card from your Graveyard to your hand. Once per turn you can discard 1 Spell Card to destroy 1 card on the field as well. 2700 Attack and 1700 Defense and a level 7 monster. Now some people would think that being a level seven monster, it'd be a pain to get out. Well there are ways to actually use that. Tribute Doll would be the best way to do that. Seeing as how you would have cards like Magical Citadel of Endymion on the field which would gain a Spell Counter because of Tribute Doll and you can Special Summon it from your hand but it cant attack that turn. Endymion can discard a Spell Card to destroy any card on the field, I'd say that kind of makes up for it.

As I've said there are ways to use this card in ways others wouldn't think of using it but its like any other Spell Counter based card, limited to just Spell Counter based decks to work well. In a traditional format you have the Butterfly Dagger - Elma to place infinite counters on the field with Gearfried the Iron Knight, making this card amazingly easy to summon from the Graveyard.

Lol Pisko Endymion, the Master Magician:

Endymion, the Master Magician is very good in theory, but that's about it. You'll summon it maybe once or twice. Get the effect off maybe once or twice, then the rest of your deck will be dead. It kind of sucks they made him 7 stars over 8, but I guess they did it to follow the Dark Magician theme so it makes some sense. If this card didn't need Magical Citadel of Endymion for spell counters, it would have been a little better, but not by much. That little can make a difference eventually though.
