Blackwing-Fane the Steel Chain, a Blackwing monster
NOT of the Tuner variety, who is a Level 4 Winged
Beast, that could almost pass for a Warrior, minus
those killer talons, with 500 attack and 800
defense, and is Level 2.
Now, this particular Blackwing can attack your
opponent directly, and while 500 attack isn't a lot,
even for a direct attack, that's a decent enough
effect. Furthermore, when this Blackwing inflicts
damage to your opponent, which it will since it can
attack directly, you can change the position of one
opponent's attack position monster to defense
position.
This is great, it makes something powerful more easy
to destroy and/or it forces your opponent to use up
a Trap or something else maybe game-breaking to
prevent that chain of horrendous events from
happening to them.

General Zorpa
Blackwing-Fane the Steel
Chain
This guy does have some potential. He is a level 2
Blackwing with 500 ATK and 800 DEF. Those are pretty
poor stats, as even the lowly Vayu can out stat him.
He is a DARK WInnged Beast, like all Blackwings, so
he does do all of the things that you would expect a
Blackwing to be able to do. He is not a Tuner, and
that I think is the true downfall of this card. He
is also searchable by every Blackwing except for
Mistral when combined with Black Whirlwind, which is
a bit of a plus.
The effect is that he can attack directly, and when
he does you can switch the battle position of an
opponents Attack position monster to Defense
position. This second effect is great when combined
with Shura, as you can turn your opponent's monster
to their weaker position and then kill it and either
inflict damage with Bora, or fetch another Blackwing
with Shura. This is a little bit of a parlor trick,
but it does help get rid of cards like Colossal
Fighter that you otherwise would not have been able
to.
The first effect is where Fane shines. Th ninja bird
pairs up nicely with Sirocco and a host of other
Blackwings. Plays like turn one Sirocco, turn two
Fane, Special Summon Bora are very much within your
grasp. Then you use Swallow's Nest on Sirocco after
using it's effect on fane to get another from your
deck and use it's effect too. That is a 7900
attacker that can attack directly. Throw in another
Swallow's Nest, Bora or a Gale and you have a game
winning move.
In testing, Fane rusn a little lacking. Yes he does
allow for some pretty cool plays from out of
nowhere, but he has almost no field presence at all.
Since you HAVE to Normal Summon him or Special
Summon him with another effect, he will not do very
much as a combo piece. It appears that Mistral, with
it's Tuner status as well as it's better stats is
the favorite for most players. Fane does see play as
a singleton, but in all o fmy testing he ha sbeen
less than a force to be reckoned with.
As of writing this, SJC Orlando has yet to happen so
we will see which it is, Fane or Mistral that ends
up taking the heir to Gale's throne in the war of
succession. Personally I think it is gonna be Vayu
and these guys will take a complete supporting role
(if any) in Blackwing decks to come.

Blackwing - Fane the
Steel Chain ...
Another new little Blackwing introduced this new
set, and Fane is much better than yesterday's
Blackwing. Mistral's main benefit (aside from being
a Tuner) was that it had a low attack so it just
lent for yet another target after a Blackwing was
normal summoned with Whirlwind on the field. Fane
affords u that same courtesy, but with a bit more
ATK to work with. 500 ATK isn't a whole lot, but
since he can attack directly, sometimes it can be
just what u need to finish the game. Not to mention
the obvious benefit of being teamed with Sirocco, so
what was once a 500 point direct attack is now a
2500 point direct attack ... or possibly more if
u've got other Blackwings on the field as well ...
or Kalut in your hand ...
If that wasn't enough, Fane has 1 more skill to
boast about. After damage calculations (from his
direct attack) u can change one of your opponents
attack position monsters into defense mode. This is
great in that often defense mode is their WEAKER
state, so one of your other Blackwings ...
preferably Shura ... could now kill your opponent's
suddenly vulnerable monster.
There are a lot of tricks with him. Mistral is
probably a better top deck late in the game, but at
any OTHER point - i'll take Fane.

N o V a
Its Tuesday guys. Im not gonna be home today but I
sent my reviews in early so yeah. Wish me luck at
the dentist today when they yank my teeth. Anyways,
today we look at the second new blackwing monster in
Ancient Prophecy, Blackwing - Fane the Steel Chain.
Now this cards actually pretty broken thanks to
Sirocco the Dawn. Give Fane the combined attack of
all the Blackwing monsters on the field then attack
directly. That can be a lot of damage, considering
how easily Blackwings still swarm the field. Even
with Vayu the Emblem of Honor, Fane may not be as
amazing as other Blackwings, but combined with
Siroccos effect, he's actually quite the beast.
