Dark Paladin |
Lets start by saying lots of the Genex monsters look
really awesome. Genex Ally Axel is a Level 8,
Dark attributed, Machine-type Synchro monster, with
2600 attack, and 2000 defense. With really
commonly played Synchros (even just at Level 7 and
8) 2600 attack is low, but that doesn't immediately
throw out the play of this card.
Genex Ally Axel is Synchro Summoned with one Genex
Tuner and one or more non-Tuner monsters. Once
per turn, you can discard one card to selcet a Level
4 or lower Machine-type mosnter from your Graveyard,
and Special Summon it. The attack of that
monster is doubled until the End Phase, although it
can't attack your opponent directly.
That monster is furthermore removed from play during
your End Phase. He's a good addition to the
Genex Deck, and is obviously most useful in the mid
to late game, where you will have more options to
choose from using his effect. He adds speed to
the Deck as instead of using the monster chosen to
attack, you could Synchro or what not.

Genex Ally Axel …
Meh. He’s boring.
What can he do? – U drop a card and for 1 turn u can
bring out a level 4 machine monster, all heavied out
with twice the attack. Nice, but it goes boom at the
end of the turn, and it can’t attack directly, which
is the BIGGEST mess of this card. If it could, u
would have something sweet. But as it is – it’s just
a means for you to attack over anything that might
be too big for the Axel to handle himself. … Which
is fine, but just nothing too very interesting or
fun.

Genex Ally Axel is
another one of those random sub-archetypes of bad
Duel Terminal archetypes. Genex Ally, R-Genex, Neo
Flamvell, they mean nothing. I'd list more, but I'm
lazy. Axel's just some random Secret.
Having to make him with a Genex monster is pretty
meh. The only good Genex deck is Genex Fish, and by
the time you count up the stars to see if you can
make Axel, you'll already have seven Red Nova
Dragons on your field. Furthermore, since you're
probably using Genex Controller, you'll need to find
5 non-Tuner levels, which is not an easy thing to
do.
Axel's stats are icky. 2600 ATK on a level 8 Synchro?
I thought only Level 7 Synchro stats were supposed
to get totally shafted. Oh well. At least you can
discard a card every turn to revive a Machine and
double its attack . . . but it can't attack
directly, and if you're using a Machine deck, you
can probably find better Machines about five miles
away from any Genex card.
1.5/5
Art: Gangsta robot? What?
Fun Fact: Alex was almost a playable character in
The Lost Age. I like Piers.
Tomorrow: You have COTD withdrawal symptoms. |
Otaku |
We end the week with
Genex Alley Axel, a new Synchro
monster for the
Genex family of cards.
It is Level 8, so it won’t be
painfully difficult but it will
require something big or else three
smaller monsters.
It requires a
Genex Tuner and at least one
other monster... locking it into
Genex decks or requiring you try
to fit
Genex Tuners into your deck.
It
is a Dark/Machine, a pretty solid
combination, but about half the
Genex monsters are something
else.
You will get a solid 2600 ATK
and 2000 DEF.
The DEF isn’t as useful but
is closer to what you expect on
Level 8 monsters, Synchro or not.
2600 isn’t bad, but if your
opponent drops another Level 7+ card
(Synchro or not), it will at least
tie it and probably trump it
(excluding
Stardust Dragon).
The effect looks useful, but
certainly requires some forethought.
Once per turn you can discard
a card to revive a Level 4 or lower
Machine-Type monster.
Said monster will have double
its normal ATK but can’t attack your
opponent directly.
Plus it gets removed from
play during the End Phase of your
turn.
Relevant rulings for this card…
don’t tell me what I want to know
most.
They
do explain that discarding for the
effect is a cost and that the effect
targets a monster in your Graveyard.
They don’t clearly spell out
whether or not you can pitch a card
and revive it.
Since discarding is a cost it
happens first but it also targets so
do you have to pick a target before
the cost is paid?
The monsters Special Summoned
by the effect already have the
doubling effect applied, and you can
respond to them with another card.
So for example if something
small gets boosted to over 1500 ATK,
it can be removed by
Bottomless Trap Hole.
Granted, since it is going to
be removed at the end of the turn
anyway, that might be a waste.
Continuous effects are
applied after the doubling (we
needed a ruling on that?)
From the OCG rulings, it
looks like the revival/ATK
doubling/removal from play part of
the effect is treated as one, giant,
single effect.
Mixed with the TCG rulings,
you can respond to the Summon but
there is no opportunity to respond
to the ATK doubling (established
earlier, it happens before the
monster hits the field) and the
removing of the monster from play
won’t allow anything to be Chained
to it either (which is unusual).
The most basic use is a simple
beatstick only good for running over
monsters.
Granted with its ATK doubled,
many, many Level 3 and 4 Machine
will be big enough to actually do
some good in that way.
Slightly more advanced (but
still pretty obvious) is to use this
as a shortcut to Special Summoning
small, useful Machine monsters with
effects you wish to utilize.
Since you normally pay a cost
and do the rest of the effect, I am
going to assume you can pitch a
monster and revive it right away
that turn (if not, I’ll be
overrating this card).
Even with the doubling, there
should be a few monsters you can use
Machine Duplication on for a
quick and useful swarm.
For example, you could bust
out three copies of
Cyber
Valley
all at once while having other
normal and Special Summons left to
make sure you can actually use them
all right away.
The last, great use is simply
as Synchro Summon fodder.
Combined with
Machine Duplication, you should
have another large Synchro Monster
for a minimal investment.
This card has a OTK with it, but it
is one of those “you need enough
specific cards you might as well
hope to top deck
Exodia” ones that many, many
cards have.
Still, I felt remiss not to
mention it.
Right now I’ll have to make
abusing this with
Catapult Turtle one of my
background projects.
There has to be something one
could do…
Ratings
Traditional:
2/5 – I believe this is a
Chaos/Chimeratech
OTK that is still viable in this
format.
It might actually work in
there.
Advanced:
3/5 – Great effect, but it requires
running more
Genex monsters, including a
Tuner to get it out.
In a pure
Genex built it is a must and it
makes splashing them into
Dark/Machines worth trying.
Aesthetic:
4/5 – I am a sucker for robots, and
this one a) looks like it has a
giant duel disk on its arm and b)
looks like it could almost transform
into one of the circular Duel
Runners.
I am still selling my former
collectables on eBay. I’ve had
a lot of hobbies over the years, so
at various times I’ll have comic
books, manga, action figures, and
video games on the auction block.
You can take a look at what’s up for
bids
here. Just a reminder,
Pojo is in no way responsible for
any transactions and was merely kind
enough to let me mention the
auctions here. ;)

The Crowning |
Hello there Pojo, this is The Crowing here with
his first review. Here we have one of the "Genex
Ally" synchro monsters, Genex Ally Axel, He is a
level 8 DARK, Machine synchro monster with 2600
attack and 2000 defense. Level 8 is arguably the
best level for a synchro to be, other then 6. Dark
is the best attribute, hands down. Machine is meh,
other then Limiter Removal and the Chimeritech
Dragons, they dont have much going for them. 2600 is
high enough to take down most anything thats not
named Goyo Guardian, Judgment Dragon or Dark Armed
Dragon. 2000 defense can block most level 4 and
lowers, but anything higher easily beats him. His
defense is a non issue, considering hes not going to
be in defense unless Book of Moon is involved.
Now, he can only be synchro summoned by using a "Genex"
tuner, currently only one exists, and thats Genex
Controller who is a level 3 normal monster. You also
use 1 or more non tuner monsters, so hes semi
generic. Obviously hes not going to be used in
anything other then a Genex deck.
His effect allows you once per turn discard one card
to special summon a machine type monster thats level
4 or lower. Wow, thats amazing, it lets you reuse
that Genex Controller you probably just sent to the
grave to synchro summon Axel in the first place, or
any other machine thats in the grave, Machina
Gearframe anyone? But thats not all, the attack of
the monster special summoned is doubled, so its like
a limter removal, the downside is that monster
cannot attack direct, but thats a small price to pay
for instant synchro fodder or a big beatstick. Oh
and the monster is removed from play during the end
phase, but that really doesnt matter, because
chances are you are going to use that monster for
something.
All in all a really good genex card.
Traditional - 1/5 (Like every card that isnt on the
banlist this card is near useless in traditional.)
Advanced- (Genex Decks only) 4/5 (A solid card that
would give your Genex deck a solid boost)

The
Legion |
Genex Ally Axel is a level 8 synchro, which
immediately makes its playability plummet due to the
incredibly crowded slot for level 8 synchros. It is
a dark machine, which both have solid support, and
it is a part of the relatively unused Genex
archetype. Once per turn, you can discard a card to
bring out a level 4 or lower machine from your grave
and double its attack. However, it can’t attack
directly, and at the end of the turn, it’s removed
from play. It’s a decent effect, but in the world of
synchros, decent just isn’t enough. Why play this
when you can use Stardust, RDA, Scrap Dragon,
Colossal Fighter, etc.
