Thursday
Witch of the Black Rose, a Level 4, Spellcaster, and
Dark attributed Tuner.
A Level 4 Tuner is excellent.
Now, she has 1700 attack, and 1200 defense,
and she can't be Special Summoned, usually not a
good thing.
Anyway, when this card is Normal Summoned, and you
control no cards, you Draw 1 card, and you reveal
said card.
If you Draw a Monster, that card goes to the
Graveyard, and this card destroys itself.
I'm not sure what exactly is the deal, with this
card, so to speak.
There must be something, or a combo involved here
I'm just blind too, so I'm just giving an average
rating, and moving along...apologies.

Witch of the Black Rose
Today's card is a level 4 DARK Spellcaster with 1700
ATK and 1200 DEF, actually impressive stats after
the last few cards this week. It is also a level 4
Tuner, which is always going to be a boost to a
card's playability.
The effect is that it cannot be Special Summoned,
and if you have no cards in your hand when you
Special Summon it, you draw a card. You reveal it
and if it is not a monster, you discard it and
destroy the monster.
Wow, this card went from promising to worse after
reading it's effect. It can really get you out of a
jam, but more often than not it will just be a bad
card. The cannot be Special Summoned part is really
a drag and puts a big damper on the playability of
ANY monster. Then the effect is certainly not good
enough to justify the bad parts of the effect.
Basically we have three solid level 4 Tuners, Rose,
Magician and Hyper Synchron, so we really have no
need for another one that is just not that good.

Witch of the Black Rose …
Where to begin … this is another one of those
noodle scratchers that really makes u want to
believe this card is good … even possibly GREAT …
It’s one of those cards that for everything that’s
good about it, they instantly threw something else
in to take away from it. It’s Dark. Spellcaster.
Both great. 1700 ATK? – ok. It can fight. And it’s a
Tuner. Super! … Oh, wait - But now she can’t be
special summoned … err … ok … And when she is normal
summoned, u draw 1 card. Awesome! … Oh, but u also
have to have no other cards on the field … uhm …
fine … And not only do u have to reveal the card u
drew, but unless it’s a monster, u have to discard
it to the graveyard … uhg … Man, really?
If it were the other way around and u could KEEP the
spell or trap, and send it to the grave if it WAS a
monster … u would have something that would be just
DYING to be abused … But that’s not the case.
The fact that she can’t be special summoned is what
hurts her the most, as she is a Spellcaster and its
one of their best tricks. Plus with her Tuner
ability, its hard for her to spring in unannounced
and synchro something up for u. U rarely EVER want
or expect to have an empty field, except if A – its
your opening move, or B – u are top decking. In both
situations, she’d be lovely, although I would prefer
option B, as by the time u are top decking, u may
have spent ur valuable resources already, and be
less at risk of accidentally dumping a crucial spell
or trap that u wind up drawing from her effect, and
u are much more in need of pulling an extra monster
to your hand in case your opponent destroys her.
She IS pretty ok, and there are some pretty
awesome things that can be done with her … But
assuming u are playing well throughout any given
game, she’s not gonna be as useful in as many
situations as would truly justify her place in a
deck.
Yeah, she’s weird. But I still kinda like her.

Witch of the Black Rose, or as I believe it was
in Japan, Black Rose Witch, which should sound
familiar. Anyways, this witch is a level 4 tuner
monster that cannot be special summoned, and when
its normal summoned while you have no cards, you
draw a card and reveal it, if it is not a monster it
is sent to the graveyard and witch is destroyed.
1700 attack is decent and being a level 4 tuner,
dark attributed too, well its pretty good.
Personally though I would rather use Flamvell
Magician, it can be Special Summoned, its a level 4
tuner too, and its only 300 points weaker than Witch
of the Black Rose, and since its 1500 or less you
can search Flamvell Magician with UFO Turtle. Witch
of the Black Rose is decent, but there are
definately better options.

Name:
Witch of the Black Rose
Level:
Four
Attribute:
Dark
Types:
Spellcaster/Tuner
ATK:
1700
DEF:
1200
Effect:
This card cannot be
Special Summoned.
When this card is
Normal Summoned
while you control no
cards, draw 1 card
and reveal it.
If the card
you drew is not a
Monster card, send
it to the Graveyard
and destroy this
card.
Stats:
Witch of the Black Rose is Level
4, so she’s easy enough to drop into
play.
She’s Dark, allowing her to
feed some of the nastiest Monsters
in the game.
She’s a Spellcaster, opening
up a few extra opportunities (like
getting over halfway to
Arcanite Magician).
1700 ATK is great for a Tuner
and 1200 DEF is decent: at least you
won’t die to some random tiny effect
Monster.
As long as the effect isn’t
detrimental, this card should easily
be finding its way into a few
competitive decks.
Effects:
This card cannot be Special
Summoned.
That
hurts, especially for a Spellcaster
of this side that has access to
Magician’s Circle, let alone if
this happens to be the only card and
you need to use
Magical Dimension.
It also has been ruled not to
count as an actual effect, so you
can’t creatively negate it in order
to get around it.
Still, we can work with this.
The next line of the effect
stats that “When this card is Normal
Summoned and while you control no
cards, draw 1 card and reveal it.”
Well, that’s handy: opening
turn, any turn your opponent has
cleared out your field, and
especially if you’re top decking,
you get an extra card.
Let’s read that last line…
“If the card you drew is not a
Monster card, send it to the
Graveyard and destroy this card.”
The loud you just heard sound
was this card’s playability crashing
and burning.
Even though Monsters are
probably being played in the highest
deck ratio they’ve ever probably
had, you’re still probably talking a
50-50 chance of this card blowing
itself up and sending a card to the
Graveyard that isn’t a Monster
(probably bad).
Maybe it isn’t as bad as I am
making it out?
It isn’t.
This second part of the
effect is only a problem if you let
it trigger.
Just make sure you control at
least one other card in play, and
the effect is void.
Still, it probably would have
been better if it were just a Normal
Monster: there’d be some interesting
combos available to it then.
Uses and
Combinations:
If you are determined, you can
exploit the effect, probably a card
that let’s you top deck a Monster of
your choice.
The best such card would
probably be
Plaguespreader Zombie: Special
Summon it
by top decking a Monster, find a way
to use it up, and then use your
Normal Summon on
Witch of the Black Rose.
Of course, while I just used
a commonly played card, it’s also a
Limited card so not that practical
after all.
You could use
A Feather of the Phoenix could
let you top deck a Monster you want
to draw but that card itself
requires a discard.
In the end, you have to be
recycling something you wanted to
anyway for it to be worthwhile; even
if you discard what you want to
recycle from your hand, in the end
you’ve merely burned a Spell to
“negate” the negative effect you
just need another card in play to
avoid.
On the unlikely chance you
discard something like
Night Assailant and retrieve a
Flip Effect, you… still have gone to
a lot of trouble for minimal gain.
Better to just make sure you
have another card in play to prevent
the effect from triggering.
Ratings
Traditional:
1/5 – All the negative effects built
into the card offset the token bump
I’d have given it for being
Chaos food.
Advanced:
2/5 – I hate stat inflation/ATK
creep/whatever you want to call it
and even I think this was overkill
to balance out the Tuner.
Summary
Unless they’ve got something
interesting in the works to combo
with this card, it seems like
something they over thought.
Use it if you rarely have an
empty field or don’t fear top
decking it in a pinch.

Witch of the Black Rose:
This is a very interesting card. It can
replace itself if you are willing to take a gamble.
I really like the concept of this card. Too
bad there isn't a reliable way to abuse her effect
yet. Plaguespreader would be a nice way to
make sure you are drawing a monster, but that's the
only card in the current meta that would combo well
with her that I can think of. A cool idea that
I hope we get to see some more of... A Feather
of the Phoenix could become an incredibly useful
card if we get more monsters with this type of
effect.
