Tuesday
Starlight Road, a trap Yusei uses in his duel with
Roman on the cartoon. So, you can only
activate this Trap when an effect is activated that
would destroy two or more cards you control, so we
are all ready in situational territory.
However, on the plus side, you do get to negate the
effect of said card and destroy it, and Special
Summon a Stardust Dragon from your Extra Deck.
I think this is more useful as a side-deck card, but
see if it works for you.

Starlight Road
Every once in a while there is a card that comes
along and everybody thinks "wow, I could have used
this card LAST format". Starlight Road is the
epitome of THAT card. Starlight Road is a Normal
Trap that has the effect of negating an effect that
would destroy two or more cards on the field and
destroying the card and then Special Summoning a
copy of Stardust Dragon from your extra deck.
This card is broken. Gyzarus will now NEVER target
more than one facedown, and Lyla will almost ALWAYS
precede JD now. The effect this this card will have
on the format is enormous. Heavy Storm is now a bit
of a liability and this is a card that could even
have far reaching effects on the TRADITIONAL format,
where rarely ever does a card make it into play and
it will be run in 3's.
You get the picture yet? This is probably the most
impactful card made since Stardust Dragon itself. My
Body As A Shield is crying itself to sleep at night
and even Solemn Judgment is throwing a fit.
As it stands in Advanced, it will not have too much
of an impact. Most decks will pack only a single
copy maindeck to counter the inevitable Heavy Storm.
The deck that really benefits from this is the Burn
deck. Nobody out there is expecting a burn deck to
even be viable with Heavy STorm, JD and Gyzarus
making a huge splash in the format. Now, a stall
strategy has a powerful new weapon, and a Chain
Strike build can really do some damage, especially
with Royal Decree down in playability.
My advice, get a playset asap. You might only use
one, but it is always good to have a playset of
cards that define formats, and this card will have
people asking before a play not if Mirror Force is
down there, but "Do they have Starlight Road....?"
I believe that this is the first card that I have
EVER given a perfect score across the board.

Starlight Road ...
Let me be the 1st to say - Damn this card.
But it seems pretty good. right? Negate mass
destruction AND special summon a great monster at
the same time. What's not to be impressed with,
right?
Ok, for Starlight Rollercoaster ... uhm ... Road ...
to work, 2 or more of your cards have to be
potentially destroyed by a card effect. There are a
few commonly played cards that involve mass
destruction - Lightsworn Decks, Black Rose Dragon,
Heavy Storm, Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute, and
MAYBE Lightning Vortex. So basically u are sitting
waiting for one of those things to go off to make
your card work ... assuming u have it set already.
And u also have to make sure that u have enough
targets to be potentially destroyed at the same
time. Meaning if u are trying to draw out that Heavy
Storm and have only 1 other set card in addition to
Starlight, then u can't activate it or Starlight
won't be able to full-fill its requirements. Lame.
But the GOOD news is u can use your OWN mass
destruction to trigger its effect. Your own Heavy
Storm or Torrential Tribute would be just fine ...
except u lose the benefit of actually making good
use of those cards.
So I wouldn't even call this card situational. I'll
just say that timing is everything with it, and u
wind up NOT getting the timing right at least 3 out
of 4 times u draw this card. It's great when it
works, but unless u are committed to a deck revolved
around Stardust Dragon, Starlight Rollercoaster is
only slowing u down more than u care to admit to
yourself.

Starlight Road:
The card that's going to define a format...
there, I said it. Unleash the hate. This
card counters sooo many cards that are game
breakers. Many duelists have already stopped main
decking Heavy Storm and replaced it with Giant
Trunade in fear of this card. Judgement Dragon
can no longer be dropped and popped with total
disregard for the back row. Gyzarus becomes a
risky move for G-B players unless they have
activated cold wave or something of that nature
first. Starlight Road also gives Stardust
Dragon's alter-ego decks (Assault Mode/Majestic)
more viability. I could go on forever about the
cards that Starlight Road impacts, but the point is
this is one giant step towards slowing down the
meta. And... that's what this game needs if
new decks are ever going to get a chance to be
competitive.
Traditional: 5.0 (raigeki, dark hole,
harpies feather duster, heavy storm, etc.;
this card rocks them all)
Advanced: 4.5 (not as many cards to
negate and eventually people are going to adapt to
this card)

Today’s CotD is best described as
“interesting”.
It has been a pain to review:
this is my third draft, as the first
two were turning into rants on the
flaws within the game.
It was far too much effort
being spent on a relatively simple
card.
So if this review seems
rushed, forgive me, but I fear it is
the only way I’ll get this done
right.
This should have been a
Counter-Trap, given its effect, but
it isn’t and that hurts it.
The effect being divided was
a good move: if you can’t Special
Summon
Stardust Dragon, or doing so
would be undesirable, you don’t have
to.
It is also important to note
that there is no distinction between
monsters, Spells, and Traps: if two
of your cards are threatened, you
can activate this.
It avoids being overpowered
by only Special Summoning
Stardust Dragon: it doesn’t
count as a proper Synchro Summon so
while
Stardust Dragon can still
sacrifice itself to save another
card it is illegal as a revival
target, even for its own effect.
It is a quirky card in rulings as
well: so much so that it more than
doubles the length of this review
when I go to list them, so you’ll
have to look them up yourself.
Single removal, bounce, suboptimal
usage of mass destruction, etc. can
all bypass this card.
I think it might be worth
main decking in Traditional,
strangely enough: if you’re not
facing a FTK deck, you probably are
facing
Chaos and that means at least an
eighth of the deck can trigger this.
In Advanced, I will consider
a copy or two from now on in my side
deck.
In either case, it often
won’t make it and the list of
candidates is long for either
situation.

Starlight Road starts off Tuesday, a brand new
promo from the Duelist Pack Collectors Tin 2010,
which comes with the new Duelist Pack Yusei Fudo 2
and an Ancient Prophecy pack or two. We aren't here
to look at merchandise though are we? Starlight Road
is not a Counter Trap Card, so there is sort of an
automatic draw back, because it becomes a card that
is easily chained too. Royal Decree, Trap Stun and
so on, are all cards that can easily counter this
card. To activate this card, it must be when an
effect is activated that would destroy 2 or more
cards on the field. Torrential Tribute and Mirror
Force are all cards that are good examples of this,
as well as Gladiator Beast Gyzarus, even though
Heraklinos is yet another card that can stop
Starlight Road. All of those cards are cards that
Starlight Road can be chained to. Negating the
effect ( assuming a good player that this card is
used on doesn't negate it by using Heraklinos/Trap
Stun/Royal Decree ) and destroying the card that
would destroy cards on the field. Now, this is kind
of ironic in a way. Because you can special summon a
Stardust Dragon from your extra deck, yet Stardust
Dragon can easily stop Starlight Road from
destroying the card you activated against whoever
would be using Starlight Road. Its a good card but
personally I don't see people using more than 1-2
copies of it in their deck, with Royal Oppression
running around and all.
