Compulsory Evacuation Device …

I love this little trap. This was one of my favorite trap cards back in the day, and it still is. I feel it went largely unnoticed at the time, but as of late, I see people using it more. Essentially, it sends one monster on the field back to its owner’s hand. Quite simple. Can be used offensively - against your opponent … ideally send back something they worked hard to bring to the field, or defensively – rescuing your own monster from some sort of destruction … or a combo of BOTH … like in a Fortune Lady build, removing Light from the field – returning her to your hand AND triggering her effect at the same time.

It’s a fun trap that can do a lot of things for u. And its chainable, so its great to bait out a Heavy Storm or MST too, and still get its effect. It doesn’t do a LOT to seal the game in your favor, but it can really help u out, and is almost never a dead card in your hand. What more could really ask for out of a trap?

Time to finish off the week, and what better card to do that with than Compulsory Evacuation Device. Wow, a card with many uses. Returning Synchro monsters back to the deck, returning a DAD that called Priority with its effect so they cant exactly summon it again off the bat, returning Fortune Lady Light to the hand so you can special summon another Fortune Lady from the deck to the field, he list goes on. Its a ccard with a simple effect. Return 1 monster on the field to its owner's hand. Single handedly it can disrupt a Blackwing or Six Samurai deck, considering they have to normal summon something before they can swarm. Soon as they Normal Summon a Blackwing/Samurai you can play Compulsory and shoot it back to their hand before they can swarm you. Its good for taking out Stardust Dragon too since it doesn't destroy but simply returns it to the extra deck. Compulsory is an excellent card for chaining and baiting out Heavy Storm and Mystical Space Typhoon, even Dust Tornado. Its good for bouncing a Gladiator Beast so the opponent cannot use it to tag out for Gyzarus or even Heraklinos. There are many many uses for Compulsory Evacuation Device, and it has no cost. Definately a good card and something for most people to consider, even if its just in the side deck.

Oh how times change.  This card was originally reviewed by the Pojo crew here, as part of an “Underrated Trap Cards” week in 2004.

Name: Compulsory Evacuation Device

Type: Normal Trap

Text: Return 1 monster on the field to its owner’s hand.

This should be a simple review for a simple card, at least by my standards.  Compulsory Evacuation Device is a great example of trading card advantage for field advantage: bounce a Monster to avoid damage while making it easier to counter-attack on your next turn.  Skillful use of the card can even turn what amounts to a card of loss of your part (since the Monster just goes back to their hand) to actual advantage: responding to removal while bouncing a Synchro Monster back to the deck being a common enough example.  This is a strong pick for most decks now, and a must if you’re running a dedicated “bounce” deck.

I feel I should add that I am almost worried by how good this card is: I like Compulsory Evacuation Device as an easy way to deal with some severely overpowered Monsters right now… but many balanced Monsters are going to be unfairly punished by it, as is the case with the rest of the generic, costless removal in the game.
