Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Trust Guardian
#TSHD-EN009

This card cannot be used as Synchro Material Monsters except for the Synchro Summon of a Level 7 or higher Synchro Monster. Once per turn, that Synchro Monster cannot be destroyed by battle. Each time this effect is applied, that Synchro Monster loses 400 ATK and DEF at the end of the Damage Step.

Trust Guardian

This is a pretty solid tuner that can form a very viable deck type by itself. The idea of the Trust Guardian deck would be to create some very powerful Synchro monster (such as Thought Ruler Archfiend or Stardust Dragon). The effect of Trust Guardian would then make the card insanely powerful and almost impossible to destroy.

I haven't exactly thought up all the components required to make such a deck. I would assume even a Deep Sea Diva engine (to make Catastor or Android on turn one and pass) along with Cyber Dragons would form a possible basis at the start. A Trust Guardian-based deck could probably win a locals and even have a decent showing at a regional. If the format ever slowed down, perhaps I will tinker with it at some point.

Trust Guardian ...

Oh man. Instant fail.

3 star monster. No attack. Nothing particularly special about the monster itself. Just a Tuner that gives an ability to the monster it Synchros for ... and not even a very good one. First off - it can only do it for a Synchro monster level 7 or higher. Restrictions on a card that's kinda crappy to begin with? ... Yeah, good start ... Anyway - said Synchro monster, once per turn cannot be destroyed by battle. Uh-huh ... And HOW many level 7 or higher Synchro monsters do people resort to trying to destroy by battle? ... Yeah, pretty much none. The only exception is Stardust Dragon. His power protects him from getting bustigated by effects, but everything else? Opponents will use a spell, trap, or effect monster to deal with your Synchro. And if, for whatever reason your opponent is resorting to trying to fight over your Synchro monster, Trust Guardian sees to it that your monster that survives battle destruction once per turn becomes even WEAKER than it was in the first place, each time it does it. So what f'n good is this thing?!

If it could, once per turn, protect your synchro from being targeted or destroyed by effects ... well, it would be somewhat better ... but its not, so ...

yeah.

Trust Guardian is a Level 3 Light…

Okay, between the Attribute (and card it implies) and the shape of his head, I am already terrified of this card.  I won’t go into detail in case it’s just an example of my warped mind.

Back on topic, it’s a Level 3 Light/Fairy/Tuner.  Being Level 3 is normally good, but hurts in this case because the card specifies it has to be used for a Level 7 or higher Synchro Monster.  So you have to have a single Level 4 or 5 Monster or six levels worth of smaller Monsters to pull off a Synchro Summon.  This can prevent the fantastic comebacks we are used to from floaters and other Tuners.  Being Light is possibly the best Attribute in the game.  Honesty really is the best policy and I almost feel bad for wanting to ban a card named after the character trait I want to encourage.  Being a Fairy is more a matter of which Type Support to use than being good or bad.  The 0 ATK means that Honest can only force a suicide instead of trading for an attacking Monster, but also means this card can be searched out quite easily with Sangan, Shining Angel, and Nova Summoner.  The 800 DEF is better than anything lower, I suppose, and at least means your opponent can’t kill it with Treeborn Frog or Spirit Reaper.

The actual effect of the card lays an effect on a Synchro Monster you use this Tuner for: once per turn it can’t be destroyed in Battle.  It isn’t an optional effect, and it has a cost: the Monster loses 400 ATK and DEF.  Honestly it looks like too much for an effect that shouldn’t often matter: most Level 7+ Synchro monsters are going to be on the bigger side and thus hard to destroy in Battle.  Dropping the ATK and DEF makes it easier for the next attack to destroy you (as long as it’s the same turn).  Plus, the best card I can think of to protect with its effect is Stardust Dragon… and Stardust Dragon will lose the protection once it does its self-sacrificing trick.

Trust Guardian is a somewhat interesting Tuner. Although you can only make Level 7 Synchros out of him (which doesn't really matter because he's Level 3), the Synchro can avoid being destroyed in battle at the cost of 400 ATK and DEF. This isn't actually very useful at all, because that effect isn't going to be applied to much use. Your monster can already be beaten by the opponent, and when its stats go down, it'll just get worse. Black Rose Dragon could work with this, but it only hits Defense-position monsters.

You're much better off using a level 3 Tuner whose effect will actually benefit you, like Gale the Whirlwind.

Art: Reminds me of Majestic Dragon, which isn't a dragon.
Fun Fact: Shreddder has three d's in it.
Tomorrow: Let's see someone make an awesome hat out of this one.
