Dark Paladin |
Monday
I'm not sure what we're doing this week, but we open
the week with a little critter known as Sangan.
Sangan is Restricted (if we're still going along
with cards that are in that category) although its
status isn't changed. Sangan might as well
read "add one Tuner monster from your Deck to your
Hand) as that is likely the chosen monster I would
say 99% of the time, if not more. There is
about no Deck that shouldn't be using the service of
Sangan.

Sangan, Snag 'Em (I like that one, say it out
loud!), Three-Eyes, Furball, Pedo Bear, whatever you
call him, this guy likes to search out things that
are 15 and under.
Sangan is one of the very oldest still-good cards in
the game (R.I.P. Heavy Storm for 4 more months), and
for a very good reason. He only got better when
Synchros came out. Whether he's destroyed by battle
or effect, tributed for any reason or even Tuned, at
any point at any time in any chain, you're getting a
monster to replace him.
Debris Dragon, Dandylion, Quickdraw or Hamster, not
X-Sabers because Darksoul puts every X-Saber in your
hand during the end phase, Lonefire, whatever. Sure,
those are all Plant cards, but they're at the top.
Not using Plants? How about all of your Watts?
Probably every Tuner you're using? Even Sangan!
Whatever!
You'll always get something good from Sangan, who
after all these years remains one of the sturdiest
summons ever. Just watch out for Caius and
Dimensional Prison and everything will be just
dandy(lion spamming your field with fluff tokens).
4.3/5
Art: He's cuter when you don't think about him.
Fun Fact: Brush yer teeth!
Tomorrow: Trading cards on the Moon!

Hey Pojo, Pheano here with another Card Of The
Day For you.
Today we will be taking another look at an older
card in a new format, Sangan. This card has seen
play in almost every format since it came out due to
its ability to search out a number of monsters in
the decks it would be played in. Sangan will fetch
you any Monster in your deck with 1500 Attack or
less when ever it’s sent from the field to the
Graveyard. It doesn’t matter how it’s sent or even
if your Sangan is on your opponent’s side of the
field when its sent to the Graveyard it will still
search. One of the great things about this card is
that you can even get the search with it if you use
it in a Synchro Summon.
As of right now though most decks don’t have much
use for it though. Blackwings consider it to be too
slow and it doesn’t search out much in them.
XX-Sabers would rather use XX-Saber Darksoul to
search out any card in the deck. It has less use now
in Gladiator Beasts with Rescue Cat gone. Gadgets
would rather use a Gadget or Machina for searching
because they give them a +1 to their card advantage
where as this you have to wait to use and it doesn’t
give you a +1. I personally like it in Lightsworns
but I play it very different than most people do,
it’s an unpopular choice in Lightsworns never the
less. One of the only decks this format it would see
play in would be Quickdraw Plant or Debris Hime
(Plant Synchro) since it searches out every card in
the deck aside from Caius The Shadow Monarch.
Another less commonly used deck that this can be use
in would be a Dark Synchro deck since it searches
out most of the Monsters and will provide food for
Dark Armed Dragon and Allure Of Darkness.
In traditional format though it has much more use
since it works with Crush Card Virus and can search
out many broken cards like Cyber Jar, Magician Of
Faith, Yata-Garasu, Cyber Stein, Destiny Hero – Disk
Commander, Magical Scientist and cards of the like.
Also it is a Dark so it helps to fuel the
ever-popular Chaos Engine.
Bottom line:
The card is very good but it doesn’t have a place in
most top decks in the current format.

Legion |
Ah, Sangan. Since its release in Metal Raiders,
this card’s been a gem in most decks. It’s a 3 star
dark fiend with 1000 attack and negligible defense,
so why is it so good? There are two reasons I can
think of. One: Its effect is easy to activate. It
goes off if it is in any way sent from the field to
the Graveyard, which includes being destroyed by
battle or a card effect, tributing it for another
monster (likely Caius or one of his monarch
friends), using it as part of a Synchro Summon, or
even, God forbid, using it as a tribute for a
monster like Cannon Soldier (who even uses Cannon
Soldier anyway?). Two: Its effect is generic enough
that it can be used in essentially any deck under
the sun. Being able to search out any monster with
1500 or less attack is great in any situation, as
most of the monsters used to set up big plays are
generally weak. It essentially allows you to pull
out whatever you need at that moment. I run this
card in pretty much every deck I build, and if it
was at two, I’d probably run a second.

Witch of the Black Forest)
Advanced: 4.5
Art: It may be fluffy, but I’d hate to get mauled by
that thing…

Sangan:
a card that has helped to define
this game.
On its own, it is next to
nothing, of course: a Level 3
Dark/Fiend with a mere 1000 ATK and
600 DEF.
The Level and Attribute are
fairly handy, but the rest is pretty
forgettable.
The effect is of course what
makes this card shine: when
Sangan is destroyed and sent to
the graveyard, be it by battle,
effect, used for a cost, etc. you
get to search your deck for a
monster with 1500 ATK or less and
add it to your hand.
This effect is part of why
having an ATK of over 1500 can be a
bad thing.
Most of the other monsters
with deck-searching effects follow
similar restrictions.
So…
Sangan can bite it and keep you
from losing card advantage, and even
gain effective advantage because you
pulled something great from your
deck.
The
main reason I think this is Limited
is the infamous
Exodia deck.
I am sure there’d be some
sort of FTK built around
Sangan/Exodia
if
Sangan were available in
triplicate, and I think I’ve almost
worked out a OTK if it were allowed
in twos.
This little critter looked familiar
when I first saw it… and when I
found out that its Japanese name is
Critter I remembered a
semi-obscure sci-fi horror movie
called…
Critters!
Technically I’ve only seen
most of
Critters II but yeah, the alien
monsters called “crites” are tiny
little eating machines.
Since they like to eat meat
and don’t care where it comes from,
that makes them a big threat to
humans as well.
Think “land piranha”.
I like the original name much
better, but
Sangan is at least a decent
replacement, very roughly
translating from Japanese to
“three-eyes”.
Neither really matches the
effect and one might argue if it is
based on the aliens, that it should
be a beast or something instead of a
fiend.

I am still selling my former
collectables on eBay. I’ve had
a lot of hobbies over the years, so
at various times I’ll have comic
books, manga, action figures, and
video games on the auction block.
You can take a look at what’s up for
bids
here. Just a reminder,
Pojo is in no way responsible for
any transactions and was merely kind
enough to let me mention the
auctions here. ;)
