Dark Paladin

Monday

Royal Oppression, newly restricted, is quite the simple Trap Card that has actually been quite in favor for the last few Formats.  Regardless of the player who activated it, either player can pay 800 Lifepoints to negate the Special Summon of a monster, and/or an effect that Special Summons a monster(s) and destroy those cards.

Royal Oppression is ridiculously good, the only thing that keeps it from being ridiculously broken is the cost.  While 800 Lifepoints may not seem like a lot, and it's not even a huge deal that your opponent can use it, but 800 Lifepoints can be a lot, especially if you're continuing to use it.

You need to get this earlier enough in the Duel that it doesn't end up being dead weight.  Also, suppose you don't have enough Lifepoints to use this card, but your opponent does, so it could backfire against you.

Royal Oppression …

Man, I always hated this card. Not cuz it was bad, but because it was that damn good!

As a duelist who loves to special summon, my usual opponents knew it, and when all else failed, their sided Royal Oppressions became main deck staples. One may be saying – “but BOTH players can make use of it, so it’s like a ‘double-edged sword’!”, but that’s like saying that Dark Hole and Heavy Storm have downsides because it hits your stuff too.
The point being is that people who play Royal Oppression known not to structure their deck around Special Summoning, or at least to use those monsters with the stupid loop-hole special summoning that this card can’t touch … if there are any … I forget …

Anyways, when properly utilized, this trap is the ultimate shut down. I mean – really!
U didn’t think that it got limited because it was ‘half-assed’, did u?

Royal Oppression

Even at 1, this is still one of the most aggrivating cards in the game. Although Blackwings are the best users for this card, as Oppression can't stop Vayu and Blizzard (or I may be wrong, who knows? At least Vayu is safe.), Blackwings are slipping in terms of tiers and tournament standings. Mystical Space Typhoon is at 2 and there are more spell/trap-destroying cards per deck now, so that means Oppression might not stay out for too long.

It doesn't belong in many places other than Blackwings, and being a continuous trap is a really bad thing because continuous cards just keep getting worse and worse. Not a bright future for Equips and Fields and all their friends . . . aside from Rainbow Ruins and Magical Citadel, that is.

4/5 - lethal, but easy to stop.
Art: They're being royally oppressed, alright.
Fun Fact: One bolt of lightning can power up a light bulb for as long as you'll need a light bulb.
Tomorrow: Snag 'Em brains.

Pheano

Hey Pojo, Pheano here. Sorry for me taking a break last week I was busy but I’m back with some reviews for you. Today we will be looking at Royal Oppression. Great card, it’s a continuous Trap the allows both players to pay 800 Life Points to negate any Special Summon out side of the Damage Step. So with this you can stop every Special Summon in the game out side of cards like Blackwing – Shura The Blue Flame, XX-Saber Emmersblade and other cards of the like. It also can’t stop cards that try to Special Summon them self from the grave like Blackwing – Vayu The Emblem Of Honor or Treeborn Frog since it will just put them back in the Graveyard and they will just try to Special Summon again but it will stop them if they are removed from the Graveyard as a part of the cost though like Mezuki. Now you may look at this and say, “hey Pheano can’t they use it against you too” well that is where skill comes in. The idea behind the card it to use it in a deck that does not Special Summon like Gadget Stun, in a deck that Special Summons in the Damage Step like Blackwings or to activate it after you put your self in a good position like after you have done your Special Summoning. This card is great for the game since Special Summoning is unbalanced and in many formats its broken. I disagree with Konami’s choice to Limit this since it’s a check to decks that special summon too much but it is still very good at two. One thing to watch out for this format though is Trap Stun and Cold Wave, you will think that you are safe from a swarm due to your Royal Oppression but then they will drop that and kill you under it. This card has been good since Special Summons were a broken mechanic and it will continue to be good for a very long time. The only reason I don’t give this a 5/5 is because I reserve 5/5 for broken cards like Dark Strike Fighter.

Otaku

We have a second week dedicated to reviewing cards that had their status on the Banned/Restricted List change a month-and-a-half ago.  We start the week with Royal Oppression.  For posterity’s sake, I’ll remind everyone that Royal Oppression is a Continuous Trap (vulnerable to removal/negation but enjoying Spell Speed 2) that allows either play (not just its controller) to pay 800 LP to negate the Special Summon of a monster (or monsters) or an effect that Special Summons a monster (or monsters) and destroy those cards.

This is one of those cards mentioned in several rulings: so many that you are better off looking up the official rulings than having me attempt to accurately transcribe them here.  I will highlight a few important ones:

ˇ         Some monsters are summoned through intrinsic (their own) effects and other through extrinsic (another card’s) effects: Royal Oppression can hit both.

ˇ         It can’t be activated during the damage step, so it can’t stop something like Mystic Tomato.

ˇ         Since it is continuous, if an effect that destroys it is activated in response (adding to the Chain) the negation effect will fizzle since Royal Oppression is no longer face-up and on the field.

This is a card I am pretty torn about: on its surface it appears balanced.  It works for both players, so theoretically it can’t be one sided.  It is Continuous so it would require a lot of work to bypass.  It has a cost that is easy when viewed for individual uses but that quickly adds up with repeated usage.  So why is it Limited?  I haven’t seen any bizarre FTK/OTK decks around it, so I assume it is because it just isn’t as balanced as it seems.  Both players can use it but timing is everything: the player running it can set it, Special Summon several cards, then flip it to deny the opponent a similar chance.  Due to the cost, a player can push for a big hit, then activate it and have a win-win scenario: either you perform a few expendable Special Summons to whittle away your opponent’s LP or you get your army into play while still being able to deny said opponent’s Special Summons.  Konami also seems to really be pushing Special Summons lately and Synchro Summons in particular (which this can negate) and so it kind of ruins that.  This also makes a bizarre sort of insurance for Synchro Summoned monsters: many are large and Special Summons are the only common source of monsters that can run over them in battle.  When combined with something like Stardust Dragon it creates a pretty potent set-up.

When it comes to this cards name and appearance, it does extremely well.  The naming scheme fits it into the Royal/Imperial series of cards: I don’t know of any support for them now, but at least they have similar denial themed effects.  The art also is detailed, technically sound, and makes a lot of sense given the art.  Could it be better?  Yes: a more modern setting might make the card thought provoking.  Personally, I would just like to see a “painted” version designed to look a little less “manga” style and more a generic classical art style: I don’t remember enough about the actual names of art trends to be specific.

I am still selling my former collectables on eBay.  I’ve had a lot of hobbies over the years, so at various times I’ll have comic books, manga, action figures, and video games on the auction block.  You can take a look at what’s up for bids here.  Just a reminder, Pojo is in no way responsible for any transactions and was merely kind enough to let me mention the auctions here. ;)
