Blackwing- Etesian the Second Sword
#STBL-JP015

Early Japanese Translation: When a "Blackwing" monster you control battles with an opponent's monster and that opponent's monster is face-up on the field at the end of the Damage Step, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.

Dark Paladin
From Bird to Birdman to Bird Samurai?

Blackwing-Etesian the Second Sword closes the week, We have before us a Level 3, Dark attributed, Winged-Beast type monster, who has 400 attack and 1600 defense, but as a good share of the Blackwing non-Synchro monsters, you probably don't need this guy for much aside from Synchro summoning.

Etesian the Second Sword also does something most Blackwings aren't accustomed to doing, he has a Burn effect.  If a Blackwing you control Battles with your opponent, at the end of the Damage step you can send this card from your Hand to the Graveyard to deal 1000 damage.

Quite interesting, and all monotany aside, is there room in the crowded Blackwing arsenal for this?  Really it's up to the Player, like the other Blackwings from the week.  1000 damage for a discard isn't too shabby though.

Blackwing- Etesian the Second Sword

This is another Blackwing Support monster, and i must say that it shows some merit, but is probably not going to rpelace Kalut anytime soon. Etesian is a level 3 DARK Winged Beast with 400 ATK and 1600 DEF. The stats are pretty weak, even for a level 3, at Least Ghibli is abl eto switch it's ATK and DEF until the end of the turn. It is a Blackwing mnonster, and Vayu+Black Whirlwind can search it out, which is a solid idea.

The ability is actually quite simple. If a Blackwing monster battles and the opponent's monster is not destroyed, at the End of the Damage step, you can send Etesian form your hand to the graveyard in order to inflict 1000 damage to an opponent. This is actually a solid ability as 1000 is the amount of damage you need to do per card for a burn spell or ability to be playable. The problem is that it has to go to the graveyard, so a Macro or D-Fissure will really mess you up. Not to mention that the fact that it is actually probably losing card advantage by losing the monster as well as Etesian.

However, in a topdeck war where lifepoints are low, Etesian can really shine, allowing you to force through damage that your opponent never saw coming. COmbined with cards like Magic Cylilnder and Ceasefire, a Blackwing Burn deck that can also swarm might actually be viable. As it is, it is too early to see if this card woul dmake an impact, but I think you will see it at a Regionals or locals and possibly mazke a bigger splash.

Blackwing - Etesian the Second Sword …

And just as I was saying how uncommon it is to take effect damage during battle (yesterday’s Power Giant), today we have Etesian. His effect, much like Kalut, is that when a Blackwing battles, he can be discarded from your hand to inflict 1000 points of damage to your opponent. Not bad. But is it as good as Kalut? – No way. Usually, unless winning on that turn, destroying your opponent’s monster is the more preferable recourse. Etesian won’t work if u kill your opponent’s monster in battle. So it actually REQUIRES that your monster is overpowered … not good if u are the one doing the attacking. Kalut, on the otherhand, gives u the edge in battle (a +1400 ATK bonus), which usually results in your enemies defeat, which also means Kalut and Etesian can’t work together. Kalut also gets the edge because its got 1400 ATK on its own. Meaning that if u top-deck it, u don’t have to rely on its effect to make it of use. U can just summon and attack with it and it will be respectable. Etesian? – not so much. It’s ATK might as well be nothing, so it can only be useful if u already have another Blackwing on the field, pulling the load.

That all being said – Etesian isn’t a BAD monster. Some kind of passive Blackwing Deck built around a strong burn mechanism would probably love this guy. But Blackwings are known for their speed and aggression, not their passivity. And they have SO many other tools at their disposal that u would be hard pressed to justify any practical usage of poor Etesian here.

Ending the week is Etesian the Second Sword, which I definitely did not just copypasta. If you ram your Blackwing into an opponent's monster or you get killed, you drop the card for 1000 damage. Is that supposed to mean something?

Art: I hate lame 5D's-era backgrounds.
Fun Fact: While Blackwings are the "How can we not break this?" deck, Six Samurais are about to be the "We need to break this." deck.
Tomorrow: You'll be watching clips of the Amanda Show on YouTube, like you do every day.
