Wiseman's Chalice
#DREV-EN060 If you control no monsters, Select 1 monster in your opponent's Graveyard. Special Summon it. During the End Phase of this turn, give control of that Special Summoned monster to your opponent. The monster cannot be Tributed, or used as a Synchro Material Monster, while it is face-up on the field.

Wiseman's Chalice makes you wonder just how wise
the man in the card is, or at least how wise the
player is for using this card. An interesting little
Magic card here...anyway, you can Special Summon a
monster from your opponent's Graveyard, which is
always sweet...
However, during the End Phase you are done with
that monster, it returns to your opponent, so you
better be winning that turn, which you likely aren't
as you can only use this card as long as you have no
monsters on the Field.
Or, you can use the card to Synchro summon,
taking a Tuner or other necessary monster, or
tribute it I suppose, remember when we use to do
that? Anyway, if you do nothing with it, your
opponent gets it back, while it can attack, it can't
be tributed or used for Synchro Summon while face
up.

Wiseman's Chalice
Here we have a throwback to a truly ancient card,
Frontier Wiseman. The chalice has nothing to do with
the monster, but it is actually quite good. It is a
Normal Spell, which is good as it is the second best
type of Spell. The effect is that you Special Summon
a monster from your opponent's graveyard. It cannot
be Tributed or used as a Synchro Material, and your
opponent gets the monster at the End Phase.
Most people said that this card was absolute
rubbish, only able to enable a one-turn Alpha
Strike. However, a few enterp[rising individuals
have figured out tat in the Gladiator Beast Mirror
Match it is amazingly effective. You steal your
opponent's Gladiator, attack and then Tag, or you
can use it for a Contact Fusion of your own, as
there is nothing in the text about sending it back
to the deck.
At Regionals this past weekend, I was surprisingly
surprised to find that people were side decking this
card for the GB matchup, and not just the mirror. I
also saw some side-decked Bestiari and Equeste in
Blackwings in addition to this card. What is even
more surprising is that it works. I got hosed in one
game against Blackwings because of a Chalice and his
Bestiari. In short, any Spell that can Special
Summon from the graveyard is a golden card, so I
expect someone will be using this card in the
future, especially as we get closer to YCS San Jose.

Wiseman’s Chalice looks like a well made card to me.
It is a Normal Spell that, if you control no
monsters, allows you to select a monster in your
opponent’s Graveyard and Special Summon it to your
side of the field.
The monster can’t be used as Tribute or for a
Synchro Summon, and control shifts to them during
your End Phase.
There are two big risks with this card: that your
opponent won’t have anything legal to revive in
their
Graveyard and that you won’t want to risk using
it when you draw it because whatever you could
revive will soon make its way to your opponent’s
side of the field.
These two may keep this from showing up in
most decks, but there are many cards that can work
around these restrictions.
I won’t worry about filling your opponent’s
Graveyard with potential targets (your opponent will
probably do that fast enough).
No, it’s the second effect that is more
troubling but it can be remedied.
First, you can us a card like
Cyber Valley
that removes from play… you’ll get to use their
monster then remove it to fuel draw power.
Second, if you flip it with
Book of Moon,
they don’t get it back and the conditions on it are
removed.
If they have something very juicy in the Graveyard,
it can be worth two Spell cards.
There are cards like
Destruct
Potion and
Altar For Tribute to turn the stolen monster
into some quick LP: extra useful your opponent tries
to destroy the monster you revived with a
non-reusable effect.
You could make a deck themed around this kind
of thing and add in
Vengeful
Servant to score some burn off the deal: if you
revive something large enough, the combo could be
game ending.
Getting more deck specific, any Fusion
material you snag is legal to use for a Fusion
Summon. It
even makes a good counter for certain, specific
decks like
Gladiator Beasts.
Simply put, there is a lot you can do with this card
but if you’re too flush with resources (namely
monsters in play) it’ll be a dead draw and if you’re
running too low on resources it can be suicide to
activate.

I am still selling my former collectables on eBay.
I’ve had a lot of hobbies over the years, so at
various times I’ll have comic books, manga, action
figures, and video games on the auction block.
You can take a look at what’s up for bids
here. I usually add new stuff on
Wednesdays and Saturdays. Just a reminder,
Pojo is in no way responsible for any transactions
and was merely kind enough to let me mention the
auctions here. ;)

Wiseman's Chalice
This is one of those cards that makes you have to
stop and look at all of the different limiters set
on its effect, sort of like Debris Dragon, to figure
out what it actually does. It's a cost-free
Autonomous Action Unit, but the only thing you can
use the monster for is its effect. Furthermore, it
goes to the opponent's field at the end of the turn.
Giving the opponent a free monster that can do
something is nothing you want to do.
So, what can you do with this card? You don't want
to revive a strong monster, because you'll be giving
a strong monster to the opponent. Revive something
weak, and, why are you even using the card? You have
to have an empty field, so even though the monster
can attack, you won't be able to do much with that
attack.
Konami looked at this card and said, "Hm, this card
has potential, but doesn't have a high rarity. Let's
slaughter it with tons of unnecessary negative
effects!" And thus, "Wise"man's Chalice was formed.
1.2/5
Art: It's a guy who looks like a chess piece, and
he's holding a cup. Whoo...
Fun Fact: I'm addicted to WarioWare: DIY. Even when
I'm out of game design ideas.
Tomorrow: These cards are all cursed...
