An interesting tweak on Kai's original design.
As has happened before (with Meddling Mage being
gold), The Invitational card picks up the flavor
of the set it is in. I see this coming into play
via morph more than the normal way, as you can
bluff your first counterspell in that manner.
Also, merfolk seem to be gone for another block,
in favor of Wizards, much to this card's
benefit. Like most of the Invitational cards, I
see it getting a lot of play early, and toning
down a bit once the new environment is figured
out. I do see this continuing to see play,
however, as it seems to be quite the strong
ability. But what do I know, anyway?
In limited, it is
both a body and a counterspell. I think I'll
usually play it if I get it.
Type 2: 3
Extended: 2.5 (Too
many good counters still available here.)

If
it's an invitational card, it has to be
good. I see this one is little
exception. It's kinda like a Daring
Apprentice that can have surprise value, but can
also eat it's friends before it goes. I
think the value of this card will be further
defined when we see what kinda Wizards Onslaught
will hold for us. There is a neat little
Patron/Wizard/Voidmage Prodigy deck starting to
brew, but we'll have to see how that goes.
In limited, it's
got legs and it can counter. Just like
complicate, for that reason, it's good.

It's
a neat little creature. It's also sort of
fits in small weenie beatdown type decks.
You could play a fish deck with these guys in it.
Truthfully, all that's important about this card
is Kai got a creature card. How terrible
would it be to win the invitational and not get a
creature.

I'm not real sure how to rate this card.
Obviously, similar effects have been tried which
gave creatures countering effects with some but
not great success (Ertai is one I can recall).
His toughness of 1 makes him an immediate burn
target and his UU + sac a wizard activation cost
seems too costly to be very useful. On the other
hand if Onslaught is filled with one drop
Wizards he becomes a little better. Don't write
this rating in stone yet as Kai and the great
Marco Blume may already have designed the
perfect deck for Onslaught and this guy is a key
part of it.

Constructed: 3 (Higher potential, though)
This card looks like it could be really really
good if
Onslaught delivers the goods we need to break it.
This means Wizards that cost one or two. For
limited,
they will have to be common to make this guy a
threat
at all. Other than that, he's an early drop,
although
very hard to splash, that can make life tough on
your
opponent for a while. In constructed, it's a
counterspell on legs. It will be great to
have out in
the blue on blue match since he can't be countered
once in play. With other decent Wizards in
the set,
he'll be outstanding. Hopefully we'll get
this guy to
continue the tradition of the Invitational cards
being
pretty good.
