Welcome everyone to a
week full of weird cards to review. These cards
represent some of my pet cards as I have gone
through the game of Magic.
Fire Covenant was
always a combo card for me. While Fireball/Channel
was always banned for use, you could combo this
with Binding Agony (or later Trecherous Link) on
an opposing creature to get the same effect.
A lead in the life
total and this combo occurring meant a game win
for me many times.
In limited, this
card is good removal, but it comes at a hefty
price. I'd probably be playing it if I were in
those colors.

An interesting board
sweeper from the early days. The life you pay is
a cost (wording from the Oracle). You also have
to choose how many each creature receives when
you cast the spell.
Having said those
things, this card was overshadowed by
Pyrokinesis and other spells throughout the
ages. Not a bad card, but like a lot of other
cards, there have been better in any format it's
playable in.
I started out during
the time you were playing limited with this
card, but never got it. But I think it would be
a great card to have, as it would break through
a creature stalemate. Also, Alice sealed (Ice
Age/Alliances) had very few creatures to begin
with.

This card has some
combo uses in constructed, but those are bad
combos. There was never a time when
Binding Agony / Fire Covenant was the best combo
in any environment, and it will stay that way.
In limited, it's a
desperation resort. Take 8, clear their board.
Take 3, clear the path for one turn. If
you have the life to spare, it can win games.
If you don't, it's worthless. I would (and
did) definately play it, though, because of the
swing it can cause in a game when played
efficiently.

Man,
I feel like the Grinch. I can't remember
when we have done some cards I like around this
place :)
Seriously though, I guess this card isn't the
worst we've done. It's direct damage after
all....sort of.
Funny thing is, I think this card is better in
limited than it is in constructed. If I were
able to get it into a deck I would definitely
draft it and play it.

Is the theme
this week "Cards that will never see play
except in group games?"
Fire Covenant is a card I
would expect to see in the deck of a casual gamer,
but not one that fits into a deck that wins in the
hands of a pro.

As
this card is only playble in type 1.5 and type 1
in a few weeks, it is unplayable by me. Therefore
gets a 1 in both limited and constructed. I did
not even play when this was viable. |

A
nifty card, but not in constructed. In limited, I
see this card going first pick almost every time,
because it is an X spell for 3cc, and X life. The
X life is kind of a bad drawback, but if it gets
rid of creatures, why not. In limited, a 4.5.
Creature removal = good.
In constructed, the fact
that it only hits creatures makes it kind of poopy.
Red/Black can do better in the way of removal. In
constructed, a 1.3. |
