Um...yeah...flanking. Okay, that is before
my time. I'm going to hope that one of our
other reviewers
will take a moment and explain that for us all.
*ahem* Yeah, this is what happens when you
let a reader make the picks for CotD... ;) ... kinda
irrelevant stuff this week.
Uh, without flanking,
this is just a grey ogre with haste. Not
bad, but I'm sure the whole flanking thing comes
into play here somehow. *shrug* Either
way, I can't imagine this card would have much
impact on any environment. *yawn*

Suq'Ata Lancer
Mirage block brought with it the ability called
Flanking. Flanking was
underappreciated at first, but was recognized as a
very powerful combat
ability soon enough. When a creature without
flanking blocks a creature with
flanking, the non-flanking blocker receives a
-1/-1 until end of turn. That
means that 1/1 non-flankers that block the Lancer
go to the graveyard
without dealing any damage. Suq'Ata Lancer was
extra cool because it had
haste, even though they didn't call it that then.
As a powerful common,
Suq'Ata Lancer was awesome in limited play. In
constructed, he was a part of
quite a few aggressive decks, mono red as well as
red/green.

Suq'Ata Lancer
Ah, the guy that made
Grey Ogre the worst card ever. The Lancer was the
must have draft card for the Mi/Vi/Wl format. He
was an amazing tempo play, being able to attack in
to someone else three drop on turn three and
either hit for two, or take out their three drop
if they blocked, since so few creatures had a
three toughness in that format for a three drop.
This guy was a staple in the format, and only
recently, with Wizards pushing more and more
towards stronger creatures, has he fallen out of
memory as one of the best of his time.

This is a great card. I always liked flanking.
This was probably the best of the flanking
creatures. this is largely due to the fact that it
has haste. This guy was reasonably hard to stop.
In casual play, it's good, but highly underrated.
It also only an average creature in limited play.

Suq'Ata Lancer --
This card isn't over-the-top amazing, but it is a
solid creature for its cost. A 2/2 with haste is
nothing to scoff at, and when you add Flanking to
the mix, the creature becomes a viable threat. I
wouldn't play the Lancer in Type I, just because
his quality isn't quite up to snuff with good red
threats like Ball Lightning or Mogg Fanatic. In
limited or casual, however, the Lancer will always
get my consideration. His Flanking ability can
knock out many other creatures in the early game,
or at least provide enough advantage to swing the
game in your favor. Casual games especially don't
like guys to start swinging early, and combined a
few more early threats, the Lancer becomes a force
to be reckoned with.

Flanking should make a comeback, and this guy saw
some play, but he's not
amazing. A good filler creature.
