Perplex
Not as powerful as you first think. This card's
value in limited is slight at best. Early in the
game, when your opponent has a lot of cards in
his hand, he is likely to allow you to counter
the spell, a spell which is unlikely to be the
most important of the game. Late in the game, if
your opponent plays a card that is really
important to him, he is likely to have few cards
of any value (if any at all) still in his hand
and he will happily discard them to keep Perplex
from countering his important card. Perplex is
bad because it lets your opponent make the
really important decisions about its function.
In constructed, this card is far too limited in
capability to be included in blue/black decks.

Truthfully, I don't think this card has a lot of
room in constructed play. The transmute ability
could be useful in most deck with blue or black
in them. There are a lot of neat spells you can
go get. The normal function of the card is
amazingly useful early in the game. If you draw
it late game, it's pretty well wasted.

I can definitely dig this card. You aren't
getting a hard counter, but you can remove your
opponent's hand from the equation if they feel
like forcing a card through. "But Paul!", you
cry, "what happens whenever your opponent is
down to one or two cards in hand? This card
would be worthless!" At first glance, you would
be correct. Fortunately, some smart guy out at
Wizards decided to give this card Transmute,
allowing you to use it to tutor up another,
better card from somewhere in your deck if
Perplex is deemed worthless.
In limited, this card isn't so hot, due to both
the nature of counters in limited (usually not
very good in creature v. creature games) and the
need for you to be in both blue and black.

Meh...often, by the 4th or 5th turn, players are
playing with only a card or two in their hands,
so Perplex really isn't that ominous in many
cases. The opponent has the choice of what to
do, which gives them enough power to make this
card less than optimal. I'd skip it in most
cases.

hey guys today we have the interesting and mind
empting counterspell: Perplex at first glance
this card reminds me of mana leak. early game
this card is great, but once you hit turns 5-6-7
this card is useless. and then... i saw it... at
the bottom of the card... TRANSMUTE!!! this is
the ability that makes sucky cards tourney
worthy. if there is a U/B control deck, this
will be one of the cards leading the deck to
greatness. early game it is between your card or
thier hand for the opponet, and late game...
well late game its almost what ever you would
want it to be! Transmute is probably one of the
best, if not THE best constructed mechanic of
the new set.
ratings:
constructed- 3.5/5 great card because of
transmute
limited- 3/5 meh... card advantage is king, but
counters are not. atleast it has transmute to
get those more importint cards
casual- 2/5 casual players tend to not like
counterspells
final thought- transmute looks like a ability
with a lot of potential, I guess we will see
what will happen.
