This card was not well received when it first
appeared in Homelands. But then again, Homelands
was not well received in general. Back then, we
had Force of Will, we had Counterspell. Memory
Lapse seemed like a waste of time. In the years
to follow, however, amateur and Pro Tour mages
alike learned that Memory Lapse has a powerful
effect on the game. At first, all anyone could
see was Memory Lapse as a temporary solution to
some spell from your opponent. Later, players
learned that there was often a big value in
simply slowing your opponent down in order to
give yourself time to win.
Often, it was MORE than good enough to have two
mana open for Memory Lapse to stop whatever your
opponent was trying to do this turn, slowing
down your opponent and equipping you with
information that could help you on YOUR next
turn. In limited, Memory Lapse, like most
counter spells, is less useful.
You are so unlikely to have very many counter
spell effects in your limited deck that a card
like Memory Lapse can end up as almost a dead
card in your hand.

Memory Lapse
Uhhh.....wait, I know this one.....it's
a......a.......it's on the tip of my
tongue......well, it was in all those decks,
like the one that that guy played in that big
tournament, and he won, or placed Top 8 I think.
And everyone said it was like......everyone was
talking about it. It's about as good as that
other counter....the one everyone's
playing.....and its mana cost is....um....good,
I guess, so......what was all that ordeal when
9th Edition came out? Something about
counterspells, and apparently people didn't like
Blue, so.......then there was that other
counterspell, that everyone plays.....you have
to pay 3 mana, or your opponent does....but this
one doesn't have that, it just counters
spells....I don't think it really has any
drawbacks.....and there was something else about
what your opponent draws......or doesn't
draw......well, I know it's really good, at
least.
