This is exactly the kind of big nutty green rare
that I like to see in limited play. First of
all, you never mind spending five mana for a 4/4
creature in green. His ability is aggressive and
doesn’t cost any mana to use. You might think it
was BAD to possibly have Bioplasm’s ability
remove one of your great creatures from the
game. The point is, the top of the deck is not a
card in your hand. This creature’s ability is
removing a card that you MIGHT draw in the
future. You might not always want this ability,
but it will be a pretty rare occasion for this
card’s ability to hurt you (by milling away too
many cards or by milling away too many of your
other win conditions). It IS kind of strange
that this ability is triggered by your attack
instead of letting it be activated by a mana
cost. This guy is probably a little too tricky
to be useful in constructed play. He would only
be good in a constructed deck so full of big
creatures that the deck would probably be less
than great.
This thing is definitely interesting. And
with Red/Green decks being creature heavy, I
can see this card getting some playing
time. It's cost is reasonable as well. And
in limited, this guy is sure to be hot.
Bioplasm -
Okay. It's junk. Anyone can see that much. It's
got a great deal of "what if?" factor to it, but
can be generally ignored, right? Well, not so
fast. I saw this in action in limited yesterday
and it was positively devastating. There's some
things that need to go right, though. First of
all, it's rather nice if you can give it
trample. There's four ways to go about that
effectively. First is to put Fists of Ironwood
on it. Each of the green decks has a reason to
love Fists, and this is why the Gruul love it.
Secondly, you could happen to have a Gruul
War-Plow. It's a rare so don't count on it.
Thirdly, you can happen to have Skarrg, the
Rage-Pits. Another card you can't count on
seeing, but it's perfect for the job. Or
fourthly, you can simply cast Wildsize on it.
Bioplasm is a big one, no doubt. Don't ignore it
just because it's an ooze.
Probably not the stuff that constructed
decks will be made of. But it might be an
interesting card to try for casual builders.
Try using Sensei's Divining Top with it to
stack creatures to the top of your deck,
giving this guy a boost. But you'll also
need to find a way to give him trample, too
to be really effective.
In
limited, I would only think of him as a 4/4
for 5. Getting rid of creature cards from
your deck may not be the best strategy in
the world with only a 40 card deck, though,
so be mindful of that. Maybe he can defend
for you.
