This card is neat, but that's about it. I'm not
that impressed really. There are a lot of cards
that make this card weak: Devouring Light,
Condemn and even Voidslime. You are getting a
large creature, but without some sort, it's not
that great. And honestly, if I'm dedicating that
much mana, isn't there something more
interesting and creative that I can do?
Just the mental image of the awesome power of
Marit Lage erupting from the sheathes of ice
makes me want to burst out in maniacal laughter
and command my opponent to beg for mercy.
Unfortunately, that image is the only good thing
about this card. If you ever try to make this
card work in a real game, your opponent will
probably look at you incredulously, and then
wait for you to spend 27 mana to remove 9
counters before using his Stone Rain, or perhaps
waiting for Marit lage to make an appearance
before eliminating it with a Boomerang, or a
Flickerform, or some other such thing and then
thank you for giving him a free game win. I'm
sure lots of people will put this in Chisei,
Heart of Oceans decks or combo it with Aether
Snap, but any sanctioned format that supports
those cards will support, faster, more efficient
decks. The only real use for this I can see is
as an alternate win condition for Heartbeat Maga
decks (or any other deck with an infinite mana
engine) for when Maga just won't work. If people
start using Ivory Mask to stymie Heartbeat Maga,
it may throw a few of these in the sideboard as
a non-targeted way to turn infinite mana into 20
damage.
I've never been the kind of player who sees huge
numbers on a card and is impressed. Something a
bit more subtle is required for me to take
notice. And Dark Depths just doesn't have it.
The token created may be huge and
indestructible, but it can still be bounced. And
putting 30 mana and who knows how many turns
into it just to be unsummoned (when your
opponent can see it coming) just seems like a
bad choice. Dark Depths is funny, but it's never
going to mkae a splash anywhere outside of the
casual tables.
This is one of those cards that you want to play
REALLY BADLY, but you know that it sucks badly.
Paying 30 many is WAYY too much for even a 20/20
creature. Even worse depths takes up one of your
land drops, and the thing doesnt even produce
mana!
There is one thing going for this card though,
and that is flavor. This is probably one of the
most flavorful cards I have ever seen, and me
being a part vorthos, will probably end up
getting a foil playset.
Ratings:
constructed- 2/5 maybe someone will find a way
to get 30 mana easy or get rid of the counters a
easy way (aether snap maybe?)
limited- 1/5 you will die before this gets out
casual- 4/5 this is the stuff that casual
players live for
flavor- 7/5 a frozen planeswalker just waiting
to be broken out, awsome. Plus it gets a extra
bonus point for looking odly like the god
cthulhu
final
thought- this is probably the closest we will
ever get to having a planeswalker as a card, or
token in this case, so savor the moment
