Big, tri-color Vampire. All Vampires have
merit-- Wizards designs them to because they're
cool. This one is tricky to get out, but if you
only can, then you've got good times indeed.
Garza Zol,
Plague Queen - Blue/Red/Black has produced some
of the most impressive legends in history.
Sol'Kanar. Nicol Bolas. Crosis. Lord of
Tresserhorn. Mishra. Garza Zol lives up to that
pretty well. She's got some nasty abilities and
a very respectable size to her. The mana cost
isn't outrageous, either. It seems unlikely that
Garza's going to be doing much constructed
damage, but I wouldn't put it past her.
Meanwhile, she's a colossal bomb in limited. 5/5
fliers are hard to deal with. 5/5 fliers with
haste that draw you cards are next to
impossible. She requires building your deck
around it a bit, but still very solid.
Admittedly, for 7 mana, you do get bang for your
buck- Garra Zol is an impressive flying, hasty
fatty that's simply fantastic as a finisher.
Given the right deck (Control or Reanimator
should work well), this vampire queen could
shine, but pales in comparison to stronger
finishers like Simic Sky Swallower, which is
invulnerable to all types of removal (like
Moritfy) that are crawling around Standard at
the moment. That being said, Garra Zol will
probably scare your opponents senseless in
limited. Flying, card-drawing and self-pumping
vampires usually win the game by the next turn.
Constructed: 2.4
Casual: 4.2
Limited: 3.5

Garza Zol,
Plague Queen
How much would you pay for a 5/5 flyer with
haste who gets bigger if they block it and who
draws you a card if they don't? One B and 7
life? Me too. In fact, I'm kicking some other
fatties out of my reanimator deck right now to
make more space for this one (that's a lie, I'm
actually eating lunch in my office right now).
Great in limited if you happen to be playing
those colors, or if you can grab her early
enough to try to force those colors. The only
problem then is that she's not a snow creature,
so she dies to a particular common removal spell
we all know and love. I don't expect to see her
in constructed outside of reanimator decks, but
we are in a gold-heavy environment (thanks
Ravnica) and we're about to lose some great 5/5
flying beatsticks, so it's hard to say what
could happen.
Here we have Sengir Vampire on crack. Of course,
you run into the problem that she costs 7 and
requires three colors. While the color
requirements are not too hard to pull off in
constructed, the high cost is a large turnoff.
Maybe if she were untargetable like Simic Sky
Swallower, but sadly that's not the case.
In casual, I guess if you like vampires, this is
a decent addition if you can support the three
colors.
In limited, she wins the game if she hits the
table, but the tri-color cost drops her stock a
bit. I'd only pick it if I were playing those 3
colors for some reason, but don't try to splash
her.
