The "creature that starts off small and cheap
and gets big and scary" has a venerable history
in Magic; Quirion Dryad, Vinelasher Kudzu, and
Tarmogoyf have all seen competitive play for
their explosive potential. Feral Hydra is a
little different in that it requires investment
specifically in it, whereas the previous three
allow you to do other things as well. As such,
it's a little less efficient than the others,
but has plenty of applications; I would give it
a try in at least block constructed, anywhere
you expect to have a lot of mana. It might be
fun for that deck of yours that combines Mana
Flare and Gauntlet of Power, too.

Feral Hydra
Constructed:
Make a big creature and watch it get Terror or
bounce. Not cool.

Limited:
Make a big creature and watch it get chump block
or something else weird might happen to it. But
seriously. It could be a good solid creature for
you can play it early or late for something
bigger. If they do not deal with it it could get
out of control.
Overall a okay creature, that can slowly get
bigger over time if you want it to. Good for
2-Headed Gaint.

Feral Hydra
Limited bomb. If this didn't have the ability to
add more counters its would sub-par to average,
however with the ability it becomes quite
powerful. The flexible X cost allows you to play
it early for some damage or late game as a giant
beater. Regardless of when you play it the
ability to soak up any excess mana (in lots of
3's) is quite nice and what makes it really
potent. In constructed it doesn't really have
that much of place asthere isn't going to be
very many times when your going to have that
much spare mana lying around to use.
