Flame Jab

I used to wonder why there were so many cards in Shadowmoor that interacted with the graveyard, until I saw Flame Jab and the other retrace cards. Then I was all like, "Yeah, this card would totally get out of control if not for Faerie Macabre." Especially in limited or in conjunction with something like Life from the Loam or Groundskeeper, Flame Jab can be a source of unlimited damage, make it impossible to win combat, and turn every topdeck into Craig Jones' Lightning Helix (not quite, but pretty close).

Flame Jab

Constructed: Scocery that does one damage, not to exciting. Retrace gives it some playability. For standard I would rather discard a land to Seismic Assault to do 2 damage rather than 1 damage. Block it's a good finisher for those extras lands you do not need. Retrace ability is going to be strong in the new standard, there are a few cards that will hose it out, like Relic of Progenitus and maybe Shadowfeed.

Casual: Fun card to spread the damage around.

Limited: Not the best removal card but can be a finisher to get the last few points of damage in on your opponent. Small set like Eventide you can get a more than enough unless there is another red drafter at the table.

Overall a good red card for it's cost and ability.

Sorcery
Flame Jab deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
Retrace (You may play this card from your graveyard by discarding a land card in addition to paying its other costs.)

I like this card. This is basically a new lava dart. We sacrifice the instant speed for the ability for repeated recursion. Depending on the format that can make the world of difference. In addition if you want to brn out a X/2 you need the spare land card in your hand in addition to 2 red mana. However in most circumstances I would rather the Jab mainly for ability to get more damage out of it. In limited its damage, so take it.

Aethereal Monday - Flame Jab

Kinda like a mini-Seismic Assault. For that reason, in constructed formats, just play Seismic Assault instead, because it's better than this due to its higher damage. It also will probably cost less mana in the long run. Also, you can fling lands at instant speed with it, whereas this is a sorcery.

In limited, however, play this. I hear reusable damage is a good thing.
