Yes, believe it or not, the pre-Aurora Sygg, the
amiable ferryman with the glib tongue who grants
boons to your other Merfolk, is still
Standard-legal. A 2/2 with evasion for 2, and a
dispenser of Bathe in Light. Remember how useful
Bathe in Light was? Counter kill spells, sneak
through blockers, all that jazz? It's still
around. Doesn't someone think this would work
against Faeries?

This reminds me a lot of Eight-and-a-Half-Tails,
one of my favorite cards from the Kamigawa
block, and Mother of Runes, one of my favorite
cards from Urza block. Those creatures are so
powerful that people would sometimes try to
remove them as a first priority, even over
superficially more powerful creatures. In much
the same fashion, Sygg is able to crack game
states wide open, and is capable of doing almost
anything from protecting creatures to enabling
forty-damage attack steps. Overall, a solid
addition to any merfolk deck; I didn't rate him
higher because he only plays with one tribe,
unlike his older counterparts.

Constructed: Blue White Merfolk decks were
strong when Lorwyn came out, but when Time
Spiral left standard they lost their lord.
Merfolk decks are still good, but now like the
good old days. This card is still a great card
for Merfolk decks.
Casual: Good Merfolk decks for casual are ok.
Most try to mill your deck.
Limited: First pick to go for Merfolk tribe.
Still a solid card for draft or sealed.
Overall a good card with a very nice ability.
Good thing it is Legendary.
