Well, there's the 3/3 flier for 5, which is too
pricey for tournament level but will come in
handy in Limited, and then there's the tutor for
another Esperite. When you hit 5 mana, you've
probably already played out your hand, so you'd
probably want to go fetch a relevant play for
next turn. All told, I doubt there'll be an
Esper archetype in Constructed that is willing
to pay that much mana for this, but in other
formats it's nice to have.
Sphinxes are back, and I think that's rather
neat. Esper is a pretty linear and insular shard
- play artifacts, do other stuff with artifacts
- but that doesn't mean it can't be fun,
particularly when your mana gets you a big
flying creature plus any other artifact creature
of your choice for the next turn.

Sphinx Summoner
There is a deck floating around featuring this
guy and one of my favorites from the new set...
Master Transmuter. Once transmuter is in play,
you can transmute this guy repeatedly to find
answers to problems (platinum angel, grim
poppet, ethersworn cannonist, etc...). In the
casual room this guy is great. A 3/3 flyer that
gets you Darksteel Collosus, Karn, or some other
fatty is always nice. In limited, there are
plenty of artifact creatures in this block so
his use is guaranteed. I like this guy.

Sphinx Summoner
Constructed:
A flying 3/3 for 5 mana is okay, searching for a
artifact creature is okay also. But it only put
it into your hand. Nope not that great.
Casual:
This could be usefull.
Limited:
Flyers are always good, and going to get a
friend makes it great for limited. Just make
sure you have some good artifact creatures to
fetch.
These types of cards amuse me. I look at them
and rarely think of them within themselves. You
almost look at card like this and wonder what
cards they will get used with. Reanimating it
can set up big things. Even playing with with
card like Astral Slide could yield some
interesting results. By itself, it's not the
most efficient creature ever, but the search
effect is quite good. Late game it could help
double up your creatures for the turn to give
you an additional blocker or even help setup a
kill turn.
Another thing to remember is that in Alara
limited environments, there are a lot of
artifact creatures to go get.
The only card in print that will get you an
artifact creature from your deck? Sounds good to
me, get that bomb in esper you drafted, get
whatever artifact creature you need in that EDH
deck of yours, and who knows what alara reborn
will bring us. I'm always a fan of card tutors
and this one flies over for 3 while it's at it.
Perhaps constructed will take master transmuter
and this card for a future standard deck.
