It may not look like much from here, but one
fetchland, Terramorphic Expanse, or- heaven
forbid- Harrow later, you just hardcast Cruel
Ultimatum on turn five. This little snake earns
his ridiculous price tag by generating explosive
amounts of mana incredibly soon.
In my opinion, the "Iconic Mythic Rare from
Zendikar" title would go to either Sorin Markov
or this card. Sorin may have the planeswalker
thing going, but the Cobra is probably more
on-theme: good with other landfall cards, good
with Harrow and Misty Rainforest, good with
Seshiro the Anointed if you want. Play it early,
play it often.
Constructed: I have been running 4 in a green
red beatdown deck. It has help out when it or
lands show up. I have not put in any sac lands
yet to see if it will run better. It took about
2 weeks after Zendikar came out to get 4 copies
of this card. I got 2 from a Fat Pack, and one
was a foil.
Casual & Multiplayer: You would think it could
help out some of those big green decks that have
these huge monsters in them. But nobody seems
interested yet.
Limited: This is just another Birds for help
fixing mana in a 2 or more color deck. It also
helps generates mana for bigger spells sooner. I
would still pick it for use and hate draft it.
Sealed if the green had some good stuff or use
it for support color.
Welcome back readers today’s card of the day is
a powerful mythic rare from Zendikar, Lotus
Cobra a two drop that can help you remarkably
ramp your mana and beatdown when necessary. In
standard Lotus Cobra is the epitome of green and
green/black decks that need to ramp into mana,
combined with Ob Nixilis rock style decks can
carve a niche into the metagame. The power of
the cobra is self explanatory the powerful mana
ability and body make it a sought after card. In
extended I’m sure it will find a niche home
ramping mana in a variety of decks. In eternal
formats I doubt it will make much of an impact
but it has potential. In casual and multiplayer
it allows you to drop your threats faster than
your opponents putting you ahead in the race to
be the last man standing. In limited it’s a
money rare pick but can also hold its own worth
going green for your second color and can set
you up to dominate opponents by dropping threats
early. Overall a powerful card that green decks
must have a reason not to play.
Today's card of the day is the extremely useful
Lotus Cobra paying homage to the original Black
Lotus is a tough act to follow, but this card
delivers. Every land entering the
battlefield under your control adds an
additional mana to your pool and with mana burn
removed this is never a bad thing. Note
that there is no major benefit to playing this
as soon as you have two mana as the effect won't
kick in until your next land drop. Instead
play something else and on the following turn
play the cobra then a land for maximum impact.
For Constructed, Casual, and Multiplayer this is
a fantastic source of acceleration. It
requires no additional upkeep and triggers off
of any land even those played from effects like
Harrow. The only weakness of the card is
it is a two mana 2/1 and is quite vulnerable to
almost every removal option.
With Limited this is absolutely a first pick in
Booster as acceleration and a source of any
color mana is critical to the format. In
Sealed if you have this play Green as support
and whatever other color(s) are appropriate.
There is no reason not to run this card when
drafted and there are several easily obtained
support options. Aside from an open attack
you will generally want to avoid using this
snake for offense and may instead look for
fellow snake River Boa as backup and a fun
mini-theme especially if running a Green and
White deck.
