In Phase One, he's a 2/2 for two. Nothing to be
ashamed of there. Four more red mana, spread out
as you are able to pay it, gets you a 4/4 flyer,
suitable range for a Dragon, yes? And an
additional four red mana after that, for a total
of RRRRRRRRRR, gets you an 8/8 flying
firebreathing trampler. Your opponent must
answer that or lose horribly. Sure ten red mana
sounds like a lot, but only the first two need
to be paid simultaneously. You can spread the
rest out wherever you have a free Mountain
you're not using. A mana here and there, and by
turn six you've got that 4/4 flyer and didn't
have to tap out on turn six to do so. And even
if you never get to Phase Three, a 4/4 flyer is
an admirable weapon.
Purely from appearance, this character could
almost have been in Scourge. He is just about
on-theme for that set, too: unleashing the power
of a dragon in several easy payments of small
amounts of red mana. Just as Figure of Destiny
led to an entire new generation of red decks, so
will Kargan Dragonlord. Play him early, play him
often.
Magic The Gathering Card of the day: Kargon
Dragonlord
Welcome back readers today’s card of the day is
Kargon Dragonlord a powerful red leveler in the
same vein as Figure of Destiny. Figure and
Dragonlord are both early drops that get
progressively better as the game drags on,
something red needs. In standard this card is a
definite include in most mono red decks as it is
a replacement for Figure and gives the red mage
something to do late game. In extended and
eternal I can also see this card seeing play in
mono red decks as it is ridiculous and can
provide a solid early beater that can become a
must deal with fast. In casual and multiplayer
this is a card that could slip under the radar
in some play groups and live to become a
ferocious dragon. In limited it requires a
heavy red commitment but if you see this card
and are substantially in red grab this card.
Today's card of the day is Kargon Dragonlord
which is a level up creature that really
performs best in a strictly Red deck as it takes
quite a bit of dedication to either level up or
use the Firebreathing effect. For six red
mana you get a 4/4 Flying or for ten you get an
8/8 Flying with Trample. Both are about
right for the level up mechanic, but neither
level stands out as being truly remarkable which
will keep it out of most constructed decks.
For Limited the very strict Red focus is a
hindrance, but it is still quite playable off of
even two Mountains and should not be overlooked
as a later game threat. In Booster this is
a first choice that would lock you into Red for
maximum value, but Red offers good options and
is a solid choice to make. With Sealed you
will almost always be running two or more
colors, so the Dragonlord will play slower.
Fortunately most other decks will run slower as
well, especially in the format, and it can fly
over most of the larger threats available.
