The good news is that you can cast it on turn
two, and level it once on turn three to have a
4/4 attacking on turn three. And the good
news... sort of ends there. At all three stages
it just isn't very relevant. It is nice that you
can cast it as early as turn two, and later in
the game you can build it up, instead of having
to pay for it all at once, but it's still a lot
of mana, and a lot of turns, to invest in one
creature and get just a 6/6 trample, when green
can get 6/6's with better perks so much more
easily.
The Beastbreaker is a little less explosive than
some of the leveler creatures in Rise of the
Eldrazi, and significantly less than their
ancestor Figure of Destiny. Still, like many of
them, he gets completely out of control if your
opponent lets him. I have a feeling there is at
least one green deck out there that he is
perfect for, hopefully one that can use him in
all three of his configurations.
Magic The Gathering Card of the Day:
Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
It would be easy to skip this review and say
this card is jank except in limited. And in fact
that's what I am going to do. This card is mana
intensive and it doesn't have the big payoff of
most other levelers all you get for your trouble
is a 6/6 trample creature. I would personally
rather run Null Champion. In standard this card
wont see play, the level of tournament cards is
galaxies away from this card. In extended and
eternal do I even have to tell you why this card
is bag? In casual and multiplayer you could use
it as an early drop and invest mana later,
except for the fact green has a multitude of
things it would rather use its mana for, maybe
Eldrazi perhaps? Also “ I am going to level my
creature” “ I Terror in Response.” Normally dies
to removal is not a good argument but the fact
this card can be counteracted and force you to
waste mana at sorcery speed is ugly as sin. In
limited this card is a beast..breaker! Horrible
puns aside this guy is efficient for the mana
cost and solid body if your in green in limited.
Today's card of the day, Beastbreaker of Bala
Ged, is the level up answer to Grizzly Bears
with the same casting cost and base stats.
The level up is a bit expensive at three, but a
total of five mana over two turns to get a 4/4
isn't too bad. The extended cost to get
the 6/6 with Trample is less of a bargain and is
unlikely to ever reach the full potential.
This is a pretty mediocre card that is better
than a generic 2/2 for two especially as a pull
later on in a game where the five mana is easy
to come by.
For Limited this is a decent pick as a filler
creature when running Green as it can be a 4/4
on attacking on the third turn. Even in
the slower format it isn't overly likely to
reach level four, but even a 2/2 for two is
quite playable. An easy inclusion for
Sealed and a solid middle of the pack pick in
Booster.
