A 2/4 for 1WW isn't so bad, especially compared
to Pillarfield Ox or Kemba's Skyguard. But of
course she doesn't stay a 2.4 for long, because
everything about her cries out for you to put
Equipment on her. This encourages the play style
of "build up one enormous creature" that people
seem to enjoy so much. If you get even one piece
of Equipment on her, you get a free 2/2 creature
every upkeep, like an even better Bitterblossom.
Two or more Equipment, and things get even more
out of control. Good luck!
Equipment has been a theme of both Mirrodin
blocks, and different cards express it in
different ways. In Kemba's case, that way is a
very direct one - even if your opponent can deal
with her, they probably won't be able to deal
with the endless supply of Cat tokens,
especially once you judge it's safe to start
passing her equipment around. And even without
equipment, she can hold off Wild Nacatl. What's
not to like?
Today's card of the day is Kemba, Kha Regent
which is a three mana 2/4 legendary that creates
a 2/2 token for each equipment attached to it.
This is a decent effect that is fairly easy to
support and can see some play in modern
White/artifact builds alongside cards like Glint
Hawk and Myrsmith. Being a Legendary may
limit it to around two per deck and the cost to
mono-White builds, but 2/2 tokens from a three
mana 2/4 is a play worth making.
For Limited the Legendary status should almost
never be a factor and the token generation is a
big advantage when available. Three mana
for a 2/4 is a good price and above the curve, but
Infect remains a concern for bypassing the
otherwise high toughness. The double White
in the cost and reliance on another card keeps
her from being a true bomb, but she's still a
fair choice as a first pick in Booster draft
depending on the pack. If supported by
later picks of low cost equipments and White
creatures the deck should work quite well.
In sealed if White is your primary color she
should be included on her merits as a creature
and extra attention paid towards any equipment
cards. Even using the effect once in this
format can make the difference as it also grants
a new target for the equipment if Khemba is
destroyed.
