I honestly never thought I'd see the day they
printed a creature with a zero mana cost and a
greater-than-zero power. Ornithopter and
Phyrexian Walker had convinced me that you
couldn't get the ability to deal combat damage
un-pumped without paying for it. But then, long
ago Wandering Ones had taught me the hard way
that a 1/1 with no abilities just isn't worth
paying one mana for, so I guess the powers that
be figured it'd be okay to let us have it for
free. After all, it's still pretty useless in
combat until you pump it somehow (Steel Overseer
maybe?), and its zero mana cost can't really be
exploited with anything that couldn't already
exploit Ornithopter. It can't even block flyers,
or defeat the intent of Raging Goblin like the
ol' 'Thopter can. I don't think we're getting
too much for too cheap.
Robert A. Heinlein once wrote, "There ain't no
such thing as a free lunch." But what the heck
did he know? Memnite's only notable drawback is
being "merely" 1/1 in an era of Titans and
Eldrazi. That's a small price to pay for helping
various Quests, boosting metalcraft and storm,
and being able to have three or four permanents
in play before your opponent has a land. Free
lunches taste the best, I hear (but the moon is
always a harsh mistress).
Welcome back readers today’s card of the day is
Memnite the first 1/1 creature for zero mana. In
standard this card has already shown its
potential in the white Argentum Armor weenie
deck and red decks utilizing Mox Opal to
get goblins out early via Kuldortha Forge, if
metalcraft breaks onto the scene this card is a
lynchpin. In extended as of now I don’t know of
any particular decks that can utilize this
little guy, possible uses in a combo deck,
in eternal I don’t think it will see widespread
play but possible fringe play in Affinity, I
think they can use a card like this. In casual
and multiplayer it’s a zero casting creature for
combo decks and Affinity and metalcraft
variants. In limited it’s a creature so that is
always a good thing definitely not a high pick.
Overall an interesting card for Affinity and
metalcraft as well as fueling combos.
Today's card of the day is Memnite which is a
zero mana 1/1 artifact creature which can only
be said to have the drawbacks of Construct as a
type and somewhat minimal topdeck value later in
the game. Otherwise this is a great card
that can be placed in any number of aggressive
or artifact based decks for additional support
in the early game.
Ornithopter can fly and can block a 1/1, but
Memnite can keep the pressure on the opponent
and is worth running in more deck designs.
In Limited this is possibly the best card to get
in your opening hand both for attacking purposes
or Metalcraft and is a top draft choice.
If one or more are in your Sealed pool they
should be played in any build without hesitation
as there is no drawback to running them.
