Nothing too exciting here. A 1/1 that you can
sacrifice to permanently shrink a creature... by
1. It is more useful than most 1/1's, since it
can hit the board early, maybe swing for 1 a few
times or even pick up a piece of Equipment later
in the game, but you can also play it like you
would Peppersmoke. One black mana to cripple a
creature. And if you've got proliferate, then
the lowly Fume Spitter can eventually take down
just about any creature, even if it's
indestructible or can regenerate. Eventually.
Fume Spitter is another card with a big legacy
to live up to, reminiscent as it is of Mogg
Fanatic, once considered the best red
creature in the game. Once again, I can't help
but think of Shadowmoor, and specifically the
elegant and powerful instant Scar. I remember
using that card to mess up combat by unjustly
killing demigods and permanently killing
creatures with persist, and this card is perhaps
even better by virtue of attacking and blocking
when there's nothing like that to do.
Today's card of the day is Fume Spitter which
is a one mana 1/1 that can be sacrificed to put
a -1/-1 counter on a target creature.
Being able to do this at will, in response to an
effect, after declaring a block, or to support
Black's removal and graveyard makes this a very
useful one drop that can fit nicely into many
decks. The only real negative against it is the
horror type instead of a more beneficial zombie,
vampire, or even skeleton to go along with
existing support. Despite that Fume
Spitter is a great card that is a good addition
to those decks and several others and will be
played in tournament level decks.
For Limited this is an excellent one drop early
on and still has value later by setting up
Proliferate or weakening larger threats for
Grasp of Darkness or Skinrender. While not
quite a first pick it is the kind of common
worth drafting several of in Booster and hoping
to see multiples of in Sealed as well.
Quick 1/1 creatures and removal are always
useful to have in Limited and a card with both
is about as good as it gets.
