Simple, yet potent. A 2/2 flyer for two white
mana. The pinnacle of the White Weenie
archetype, blending low cost, efficient body,
and combat-effective ability. Dropping this on
turn two and following up with either an
Equipment, a Glorious Anthem effect, or even
just a three-drop and swinging ensures an
aggressive start that will have an opponent
reeling for defense.
After enough years following Magic, it's not too
surprising if all the creatures that cost two
white mana and have some additional ability
start to run together. Leonin Skyhunter, though,
stands out even among that illustrious (and
ever-growing) subset by virtue of having a
combat-evading ability rather than an in-combat
ability. It may not command the price tag of
Knight of the White Orchid, or be as spectacular
as Knight of Meadowgrain, but you'll appreciate
it when it carries a sword or a warhammer over
the top of an opponent's defenses.
Magic The Gathering Card of The Day: Leonin
Skyhunter
Welcome back readers today's card of the day is
a rather unexciting Mirrodin reprint. A 2/2
flyer for two mana is average weenie range and
evasion is nice. In standard this could see play
in a possibly Knight archetype although one has
yet to emerge it is a possibility. In extended
and eternal I don't think this will see much
play as it is a weenie although there are better
options such as kithkins and other cheap
creatures with better effects. In casual
and multiplayer it is all right it can hit early
and it can chump block large flying dragons and
angels later in the game. In limited its evasive
and requires a heavy commitment to white
although it is good. Overall an unexciting but
necessary card for formats.
Today's card of the day is Leonin Skyhunter
which is a two mana 2/2 White creature with
Flying that is quite effective for purely White
creature decks as an early evasive threat.
This also adds quite a bit of value to Knight
Exemplar as a turn three play and is a viable
alternative to the soldier theme for White.
For Limited almost anything with Flying is good
and a two mana 2/2 is very well priced, but the
double White in the cost can prevent it from
reliably seeing play on the second turn in decks
with more than one color. If you can field
White with artifacts or very little of the
second color this makes an excellent early game
damage dealer and target for any equipments you
may have. If you are going for mono-White
it is a solid second or third pick in Booster
and automatic inclusion in Sealed. The
more colors you add the weaker it becomes, but
as a flying creature with a toughness of two it
is still playable even if it hits the
battlefield in the later stages of the game.
Welcome to another week of
Card of the Day’s here at Pojo.com. Kicking off
this week is the Leonin Skyhunter. The Leonin
Skyhunter costs two white mana and is a 2/2
flier. Now that is a deal!
Not super over powered so much so that decks crumble at his
mention, but certainly a staple in many white
based decks just due to the speed at which you
get a decently powered flier. I would almost
always draft this guy when passed him simply
because in that kind of scenario what can really
go up against him? And with all the creature
boosts out there, this guy can certainly win a
game for you in no time flat. When combined with
almost any equipment or decent aura, this guy
can quickly alter your opponents game plan.
All in all al very good card, whatever rarity it is given.
For reference, this card has been an uncommon in
all of it’s printings except for Mirrodin
Besieged, where it appears as a common. Even in
the Dual Deck: Knights vs. Dragons, which
released only months after Mirrodin Besieged, it
was escalated back up to an uncommon. Kind of
funny, don’t you think?
