A three-mana trick just to slightly shrink all
the creatures attacking you? Remember, if a
creature is attacking, it probably has more than
one power. So you left three mana up,
broadcasting to your opponent that you had a
trick, and this was it? For the same mana you
could have had Dispense Justice. I'd say that
for this to be better than Dispense Justice,
your opponent either needs to be swinging with
three or more creatures, or you need plenty of
proliferate effects-- preferably at least one
before the combat damage step.
Choking Fumes seems like an innocent enough
card, until you stop for a minute and think
about the crazy things it can do. If it doesn't
wipe out an entire army during the combat step,
it will probably do so next turn with the help
of a Contagion Clasp (you're playing a Contagion
Clasp along with this, right?). For things like
that, you used to have to look in the rare slot
in the booster. I think I know what the next
chase card in Peasant Magic is going to be.
Welcome back readers today's card of the day is
Choking Fumes an interesting white instant from
Mirrodin Besieged that puts a -1/-1 counter on
each attacking creature. In standard this is an
interesting choice for white in dealing with
Kuldotha Red and Boros style decks although Day
of Judgment is a better alternative in most
cases, I don't see this seeing a lot of play
perhaps against tokens. In extended and eternal
I don't predict decks having rooms for this card
due to deck space and power level's. In casual
and multiplayer this card can be good against
elves and other token based decks it can provide
a good offensive strategy. In limited its
removal that can hit multiple creatures making
it a high pick, and it can complement white
infect based strategies. Overall an interesting
combat trick that can act as mass removal.
Today's card of the day is Choking Fumes which
is a three mana White instant that puts a -1/-1
counter on each attacking creature. This
is a decent combat trick and removal against
swarm decks and works well in the sidedeck or
combined with Proliferate. Overall it
needs some kind of support to really be reliable
as it isn't too likely to clear the board by
itself, but it can really improve your position
which makes it worth playing.
In Limited this is a very nice card to run in
White or preferably a two color deck with
additional sources of -1/-1 counters which may
include several of the artifacts available in
the block. The single White in the cost
allows it to be splashed easily and it is easily
worth a slot in any Sealed build with reliable
access to the White mana. In Booster this
can be drafted quite early if you are already
going with White, Proliferate, or a reliable
source of -1/-1 generation. Your opponent
generally has to attack to win in these formats,
so the card should never be without some use.
Welcome to another card of the day review
here at Pojo.com. Today we take a look at
Choking Fumes from Mirrodin Besieged. Choking
Fumes is a two generic and one white mana
instant that puts a -1/-1 counter on each
attacking creature.
Of all the commons in the set, this may be one of my
favorites that is almost always overlooked.
White has always been a very good support color
when combined with the others, and the tradition
should continue. This card may not be a game
winner, but it sure can put a damper on your
opponents efforts. The main thing people combo
this with is Proliferate, a mostly blue or
artifact ability. And as we all know, white/blue
control decks are always a thorn in the side of
other decks. It can also be a good set up, or
even later end game when combined with the
Massacre Wurm.
In a more vintage based setting, using this with cards such
as Volcanic Fallout could be a massive wipeout
for the board. Combined with Urza’s Armor you
may not take any substantial damage at all.
As I said, it is a very useful, but mostly overlooked spell
that I think people should take another look at.
