This is a green instant that says "Destroy
target permanent" and costs a mere three mana.
Green should not have this power. Hell, most
colors should not have this power. This card
gives Green the power to answer... ANYTHING.
Creatures were just about the only thing Green
couldn't already handle, but now Green can blow
those up, at instant speed in or out of combat.
There's a drawback, of course-- the dead card's
owner gets a 3/3 token. But Green has never been
scared of its opponents having a 3/3. The threat
of a 3/3 didn't stop Pongify from earning a spot
in the hearts of Blue mages everywhere, and Blue
is the worst at creatures-- a 3/3 would be a
problem for them. Green? Just laughs it off and
blows up your planeswalker, your creature, your
land, or whatever else they decide you shouldn't
have.
I'm not sure why cards like this are sometimes
considered "tradeoff" cards. Chances are, this
isn't in your deck in the first place if said
deck is afraid of 3/3 creatures (did somebody
mention Wall of Roots?), and there are some
cards where no cost is too high to get them off
the table (nobody mention Jace the Mind
Sculptor!). If getting rid of anything at
all but giving your opponent something in the
process is a bad idea, then Path to Exile must
have sucked. And I think we all know about Path
to Exile by now.
Today's card of the day is Beast Within which
is a three mana Green instant that can destroy a
permanent and give the controller a 3/3 Green
beast token instead. As this works on
planeswalkers, lands, enchantments, creatures,
and artifacts it is incredibly versatile and
will definitely be seeing a great deal of play.
It can be used to free your own creatures from a
detrimental enchantment and give you a new,
possibly larger creature, or turn the biggest
threat on the board into something far more
manageable. Overall a great addition to a
color that is often lacking direct spot removal
especially at instant speed.
For Limited this is the kind of removal that
should be picked up second in Booster and always
included in a Sealed pool, possibly even
splashed as Green is often the easiest color to
work with. An answer to almost anything
without Indestructible and can even be used on
an artifact drained of charge counters or
heavily Infected creature if necessary.
Even turning a land into a creature can
sometimes be the best play and this does allow
for that option. The versatility is key
and there should never be a game where you have
this in hand and can't find some use for it.
Giving your opponent a 3/3 creature is a bit
more of a drawback in this format if used on a
permanent they control, but a vanilla 3/3 should
be less likely to win the game than whatever
bomb they opened up in a pack.
Welcome to another day of
reviewing awesome cards here at Pojo.com! Today
to close out our week we are taking a look at
Beast Within from New Phyrexia. Beast Within is
a green instant that costs two generic and one
green mana. Beast Within destroys target
permanent, that permanents controller puts a 3/3
green Beast token into play.
Beast Within is only an uncommon, but is sought after perhaps
more than some of the rares in the set. Beast
Within is such an amazing card I cannot believe
it is only uncommon, because what it does is
mythic. The ability in green to destroy any
permanent, replacing it with just a 3/3 is so
amazing. Imagine destroying a Jace, the Mind
Sculpter and giving them a 3/3 that they most
likely won’t use except to defend with. Eldrazi
green now has a way to combat that pesky Jace,
or Gideon, or even Grave Titan. And at instant
speed, you have the same chances as your
opponent for the timing.
Aggro green decks just got a key new weapon in the fight
against control decks, that much is for certain.
Too bad that you actually have to pay the green
mana, this would have been one nice card to give
Phyrexian mana to, than any deck could have had
this potential. But I guess at that point they
would have had to make it mythic, wouldn’t they?
