If you're springing for unicorn meant for your
holiday dinner, you're going overboard. But
then, Black has always been the color of
limitless greed and bottomless hunger for power
regardless of consequences, so I can see a Black
Mage serving unicorn at his banquet. I can't see
him casting Feast of the Unicorn and expecting
it to win the game for him, however. Four mana
for an Aura that only grants +4/+0? Most people
are hesitant to play with empowering Auras that
don't protect their wearers, and rightly so,
since losing an Aura'd creature can generate
card disadvantage. In order for an Aura to be
good, it has to be able to nullify the inherent
danger of putting all your eggs in one basket--
usually by protecting the creature they're on,
or by being so cheap for what they do that the
extra tempo is worth it. Feast of the Unicorn
isn't cheap for what it does, and it doesn't
protect its wearer. If an analogous card had
been printed in a set with Infect or Wither, or
even Double Strike, I'd consider it in Limited
at least, but as it stands, I think I'll take
the vegetarian option, thanks.
Whatever's going down in the world of Magic,
there's always time for Thanksgiving
celebration. As you'll see this week, the
holiday season comes even to Dominaria. As Auras
go, Feast of the Unicorn has a fairly high
impact for its cost, especially on a creature
with shadow (also a black mechanic) and/or
protection; but you may well be playing it just
for the picture(s) of a unicorn being eaten by
various shady characters. Seriously, this was
easily one of the creepiest cards in
pre-Innistrad Magic.
Magic The Gathering Card of The Day: Feast of
the Unicorn
Now this is what I call a feast, joking of
course Unicorns are pretty cool. This card is
unfortunately not pretty cool; auras are pretty
bad aside from Rancor and its ilk due to card
disadvantage and what not. The +4 is marginally
powerful but not worth including in a deck. In
standard extended and modern this card isn’t
legal and wouldn’t see play if it was. In legacy
and vintage I personally want to find room to
put them into my 56 swamp 4 Chimney Imp deck. In
casual and multiplayer I would rather run
something like Bad Moon or other global pumping
cards. In limited its decent filler for decks
running black not stupendous but not as
horrendous as other formats. Overall I think you
can see that this card is pretty horrible except
for the amazing artwork and flavor text, kudos
to you Dennis Detwiller for giving us not one
but two pictures for this card. Don’t eat too
many Unicorns this holiday.
Today's card of the day is Feast of the Unicorn
which is a four mana aura that gives +4/+0
making it fairly inefficient in cost while still
being strong if played on creatures with
Hexproof or other useful effects. An
Unholy Strength gives +2/+1 for a single mana
which adds some survival and has half the power
for a quarter of the price. Feast may
offer a bigger offensive threat, but other
options exist that fulfill the role well enough
with other benefits.
In a Limited using Homelands or Sixth edition
this is a much better card and the cost of four
mana with only one Black makes it easy to
manage.
The concern of a two for one removal always
exists, but even one successful attack will
usually be worth the expense. An easy
inclusion for Sealed and worth drafting soon
after bombs and removal in Sealed.
Welcome to
Thanksgiving week here at Pojo.com’s Card of the
Day section! This week we are going to have some
fun looking at various “Thanksgiving” themed
cards. To start us off, we are looking at Feast
of the Unicorn, from Homelands and Sixth
Edition. Feast of the Unicorn is a black enchant
creature card that gives enchanted creature
+4/+0, and costs three generic and a black mana.
For what it does, Feast of the Unicorn
certainly is a decent card. Anything that grants
a +4 usually costs a decent amount, so four mana
is acceptable. Putting this on something
unblockable, or with flying is a great way to
speed up the game, your opponent will have to
answer fast, or else the game is over.
Considering that many things have at least one
power to begin with, hitting for five every turn
puts your opponent on a four turn countdown.
The best option if you wish to really get your
monies worth from this guy would be Invisible
Stalker from Innistrad. Drop the Stalker turn
two, Dark Ritual turn three plus one, and there
you go, an unblockable, untargetable five damage
beginning turn three. Now that is how you end a
game quickly!.
A very nice card that I wish would be reprinted.
I’d love to see how this card interacts with
infect, and Werewolves, and Vampires, oh my!
This is my first holiday with the pojo crew and
I have to say they are hilarious. The card
of the day today is Feast of the Unicorn.
Obviously this card was chosen for flavor as
oppose to playability. Thanksgiving week =
feast = Feast of the Unicorn. Hilarious
stuff, this is a black enchantment for four that
gives +4/+0, obviously the 0 to toughness is a
bummer, but four power is not that bad. By
today's standard this is a no go, it doesn't
give enough value. Back in the day this
probably wasn't that bad, but that is pretty far
back.....
