More Goblins. It's always more Goblins. A friend
of mine did the math and figured out that if you
drop Goblin Chieftain turn three and Krenko turn
four, you can be swinging for something like 26
damage on turn four. Fortunately, the Chieftain
is not in M13, so that nightmarish scenario will
only be Standard-legal for a few months... but
it'll haunt the kitchen tales for as long as
Magic goes on. I can see it now. Krenko EDH
decks. Krenko/Intruder Alarm combos. Krenko in
Lorwyn-block decks, fueling Facevaulter and
Marsh Flitter.
Is it too late to be nostalgic for Innistrad
block?
Decades of reading Batman comics have left me
associating the term "mob boss" with sinister
characters like the Penguin or Carmine Falcone,
rather than a person who looks superficially
more like the comic relief. Goblins running
organized crime would indeed be an
innovative role for the creature type, but we
won't know for sure if that's the case on
Ravnica now until October. In the meantime, I
suspect fans of the tribe are going to like
Krenko. There are very few times that you need
fewer goblins in play, and even if Krenko is the
only one you control (say after a Whipflare or
something), things still get out of hand
relatively fast.
Today's card of the day is Krenko, Mob Boss
which is a four mana Red Legendary 3/3 goblin
that taps to add 1/1 goblins into play equal to
the number of goblins you control. This is
a great card to add to a goblin deck and can
make a huge impact when used alongside an effect
that gives it and the tokens it creates Haste.
Any additional token generation is welcome and
if absolutely necessary this can work with
minimal support to provide blockers or sacrifice
targets.
For Limited this can easily win games and end
stalemates if not removed which makes it a very
effective card with or without support.
Other goblins of course drastically increase the
power Krenko will display and should be a
priority in drafting after him as first pick.
For Sealed there may not be other goblins, but a
3/3 for four that produces tokens is worth
playing even without the exponential growth
potential.
