Sometimes you think you understand something -
like when you conclude that Alisa Bosconovitch
is just another entry in the never-ending line
of cute but implausibly dressed anime girls, or
that a certain two-mana Merfolk is a gift for
Legacy players. Then, all of a sudden, she has
chainsaws on her arms for some reason, and
you're on the wrong end a ten-hit juggle combo.
In Master of the Pearl Trident's case, the
metaphorical chainsaw to the brain came when
returnees from Comic-Con Albuquerque reported
that there are merfolk on Ravnica now, and the
Simic guild is led by one. Yes, I'm as confused
as you are on that point, and I really hope
there's a good explanation for that, but in the
meantime, you might consider stocking up on this
guy. If nothing else, he destroys the
Merfolk.dec mirror match.
Magic The Gathering Card of The Day:: Master of
The Pearl Trident
Welcome back readers todays card of the day is
the fixed Lord of Atlantis as it only pumps our
creatures and not your opponents. In standard I
don’t see this seeing a lot of play right now as
you don’t have many powerful merfolk to choose
from but a two mana lord is quite powerful so
with the right support this card can shine. In
modern you have access to 8 Lord of Atlantis
effects and a lot of powerful merfolk from the
past blocks making it a powerful choice for
merfolk decks. In legacy I think this will
replace Lord of Atlantis as it is all upside or
be run alongside Lord of Atlantis as it provides
a critical mass of lord effects. In casual and
multiplayer this card is decent it comes down
early and provides evasion for your team and is
obviously good in merfolk tribal decks and
merfolk is a popular and well supported tribe.
In limited if you can get enough merfolk this
can be decent but its heavily dependent on the
number of merfolk you can get. Overall this card
will see play in legacy and competitively if
more merfolk appear and is a solid constructed
card overall.
Today's card of the day is Master of the Pearl
Trident which is a two Blue 2/2 that gives other
merfolk you control +1/+1 and Islandwalk.
This is very similar to Lord of Atlantis and
both will be played in merfolk decks where they
are legal. This is an efficient and very
playable card in a tribal deck and can be
supported with cards that turn an opponent's
land into an Island.
For Limited there aren't many merfolk available
and the double Blue casting cost isn't very
flexible which makes this, like many lords,
quite weak. In a mono-Blue this can be
played, but otherwise it is probably better off
in the sidedeck in Sealed and passed over in
Booster for removal or a more flexible large
creature.
Welcome to
the Pojo.com card of the day section. To close
out the week we are looking at Master or the
Pearl Trident. Master of the Pearl Trident is a
rare blue creature merfolk that costs two blue
mana for a 2/2. Master of the Pearl Trident says
that other merfolk you control get +1/+1 and
have islandwalk (they are unblockable as long as
defending player controls an island).
Well, obviously if you are running an old school
merfolk deck, you are quite happy to see the
Master reprinted. In newer formats, I guess you
have to look forward to the future, and hope
that Return to Ravnica features some good
merfolk, because the pool to build from right
now is slim. The best guy to combo this with is
Talrand, and that really gets you no actual
benefits. There are some merfolk to choose from,
but nothing of grand significance.
I guess we will have to wait and see if any grand
merfolk get printed soon to make the Master
matter, but for now, he is just good in extended
and older formats.
