From the point of view of trying to use the
"Lure" ability, the scavenge keyword is probably
not as powerful an augment to it as regeneration
or "basilisk" text; but then again, those ones
sometimes feel almost degenerate. Golgari Decoy
provides you with an easy way to set up its
scavenge ability, but it still requires more
setup than using something like Thought Scour or
Wild Mongrel, and how much you can leverage the
"Lure" element of it depends partly on what
other creatures you have at the time. I wouldn't
rule out this card finding a role somewhere, but
it may not be obvious and will probably take
some experimenting.
Today's card of the day is Golgari Decoy which
is a four mana Green 2/2 with a Scavenge cost of
five and all creatures able to block it must do
so. Creatures with a Lure effect built in
will always have some value, but even combined
with Deathtouch this requires another effect to
destroy more than two blockers. The
Scavenge effect is better than nothing, though
overly expensive if any other option exists for
the mana to be used on. Overall this isn't
a card that will likely see much play and aside
from possibly running interference for a more
dangerous creature it requires too much support
for minimal gain.
In Limited this can give other creatures a clear
shot at the opponent and later be used for
Scavenge, though it is pretty situational and
neither a good topdeck nor impressive without a
supply of other creatures. The single
Green does allow this to be played easily in a
multicolor deck if the double Green in the
Scavenge cost is considered a later game move.
In Sealed this is playable, if not very
compelling, and would be a late on color choice
in Booster as many other choices would have more
practical applications.
Welcome to the Pojo.com card of the day
section. Today we are looking at Golgari Decoy
from Return to Ravnica. Golgari Decoy is an
uncommon green creature elf rogue that costs
three generic and one green mana and is a 2/2.
Golgari Decoy says that all creatures able to
block Golgari Decoy must do so. Golgari Decoy
also has Scavenge for three generic and two
green mana.
While probably not the best uncommon in
the set, it can be a game ender. Hard to prepare
for an offensive when everything you have must
focus on one attacker. The thing I always find
myself wishing for is a Lured creature with
haste. Without haste, your opponent likely knows
what is coming, and thus readies for it. They
keep mana free to Fog, they use a kill spell to
stave off the attack, or whatever else they need
to do to prevent it. I find that very seldom
does these kinds of cards pay off, but when they
do, it is amazing.
I guess the best thing to be said is
should the Golgari Decoy die, you are then able
to Scavenge it.
