This is an odd sort of card, when you think
about it. Five mana is slightly more than you
often pay to draw three cards at sorcery speed,
but it's about what you'd expect for a
repeatable scry or Ponder effect. Of course, the
real appeal of this card is having access to
either one as and when you need them; either one
can save your life, in the right circumstances.
That makes it a good card in most contexts -
going up to insane and exploitable if you have
access to something like Bounteous Kirin or
Elder Pine of Jukai. Be glad those things
weren't in Modern Masters, draft people.
Welcome back readers today’s card of the day is
Petals of Insight a powerful but slow arcane
spell. This card has seen some play in legacy
providing a powerful tool in combo decks. In
modern this card is kind of slow but fills a
purpose of digging deeply making it a useful but
slow tool. In casual and multiplayer this card
is required for the Unspeakable deck and pulls
its weight searching for cards as well. In
modern masters limited I don’t have much
experience with this card but in slower control
based deck it could serve as a valuable tool and
also ties into decks utilizing the arcane
mechanic. Overall this card serves a unique
purpose and has a solid amount of power behind
it but must be utilized properly for its maximum
effect.
Today's card of the day is Petals of Insight
which is a five mana Blue that has you look at
the top three cards of your library and either
draw them or place them on the bottom of the
library and return Petals of Insight to the
owner's hand. The cost is about right for
card draw, though it is less versatile than
player targetable options, and the ability to
reset the effect for another chance next turn is
interesting. Overall it is not efficient
enough for many builds, but could find a home in
decks with specific combos that can spend the
turn on the return to hand to try for another
three cards.
In Limited the mana cost isn't an issue and with
a single Blue it is easily included in any deck
using the color. With a solid card
advantage it is usually worth running in most
Sealed and can be a second or third pick in
Booster if a strong creature or removal is not
available.
