Interesting bit of trivia for you-- this card
has been printed foru times total, and every
time it was an uncommon. In Theros, it's a bit
uncommon to get to scry for more than 1 at a
time, so the scryers in the audience will
definitely enjoy this one. As a burn spell, it's
less damage than Lightning Strike for the same
amount of mana, but if improving your topdecks
is worth excluding a certain host of creatures
from the group of ones you're able to kill at
will, then that's your choice. I think I'd do
it, but mainly because you can get damage
anywhere in Red. Scrying is hard to come by.
You may not be aware of this, with all my
gushing about Eternal Witness and Sylvan Library
and Birds of Paradise and whatnot, but I also
like instants. Some of them, anyway. Including
this one. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Magma
Jet is one of my favorite cards of all time,
alongside those aforementioned green legends. As
a matter of fact, I'd say that a card that lets
a red deck be smart, while still being versatile
and relevant in almost any stage of the game, is
the sort of thing I'd think would be on
everyone's top ten list.
Welcome back readers todays card of the day is
Magma Jet a powerful burn spell that also allows
you to dig through your deck for more gas. 2
damage is significant amount and the versatility
of being able to dig warrants the mana cost. In
standard this is a go to burn spell as it
removes tons of threats and also indirectly
becomes whatever spell you need most, this card
will see tons of play due to the versatility and
strength of the card, not much more can be said
for such an efficient burn spell. In modern and
eternal formats this card is still appealing to
burn decks as it allows you to dig for more burn
to finish off opponents or other cards as the
situation desires and has a good damage ratio
for its cost and versatility still making it a
powerful card. In casual and multiplayer scry is
a fantastic ability and being able to destroy
small creatures can be a benefit, however there
are more efficient cards especially in
multiplayer that aside from certain situations
this card may not be the best choice. In limited
its removal, it scrys, its splashable it is
pretty much hands down a powerful and useful
card, Overall a premier burn spell that will see
a plethora of play in multiple settings.
Today's card of the day is Magma Jet which is a
two mana Red reprint from Fifth Dawn that deals
two damage to target creature or player and has
Scry 2. Two damage for two mana is a bit
below the damage curve compared to other Red
burn spells, the addition of Scry makes this a
great choice to include as it helps prevent loss
of tempo which is often a death sentence for
Red. Whether alongside other burn spells
or used as much for Scry as the burn or removal
this is a card that can find a place in many
decks across formats and will be seen
competitively as well.
In Limited almost any removal is playable and
adding Scry just makes this even more of a clear
choice as second pick in Booster. In
Sealed there is no reason not to play this in a
deck using Red mana and it can even be worth
splashing depending on the build.
Magma Jet is one of the best red damage spells
in the MTG world. Maybe you are one of those
players that think differently. Maybe you think
that Magma Jet sucks because it only does 2
damage for 2 mana. Maybe you’ve never used scry
in a Red deck. The Scry 2 ability that Magma Jet
provides is almost priceless in a FAST deck! You
have no idea how many times this damage spell
has helped me draw into a desperately needed
land or kill spell. If you’ve never played with
Magma Jet, then you’ve been missing out on a
burn spell that helps dig for more burn spells.
Magma Jet has been useful in every format and
will continue to be useful.
