In the original Greek myths, there was only one
hydra, but in Dungeons and Dragons and its
descendants (including Magic), hydras are a
species. You'd need an army of heroes like
Hercules to make a stand, but there is no way to
have such an army. Players of green decks will
forever be grateful for that, as Mistcutter
Hydra is one of the most powerful weapons
they've gotten recently. And yes, I know it's
technically never going to be "efficient,"
barring some kind of Heartbeat of Spring
shenanigans or maybe Satyr Hedonist. To me, that
"issue" is far outweighed by the fact that there
are decks that can't stop it, at all, ever; and
by the fact that there are ways to add or
multiply +1/+1 counters in almost every set,
ever. Play early and often.
Today's card of the day is Mistcutter Hydra
which is a Green and X for a
0/0 that comes into play with X +1/+1 counters,
can't be countered, has protection from Blue,
and Haste. This is a decent creature, even
against other colors, as a flexible option for
whatever mana is available and getting Haste to
take advantage of an opening. It can be
bounced to hand and replayed with more mana
without missing an attack, which could be a deck
concept. Facing Blue it excels and is a
serious threat, which should make this a
frequent inclusion in any mana acceleration
builds either in the maindeck or at least the
sidedeck.
In Limited this is a very powerful card if
played late and is still viable early if needed,
though the lack of Trample or other effects
leaves the flexibility as the main benefit.
Against Blue players it is a dominating threat
and very difficult to handle with a secondary
color, which further increases the value in the
format. As a Haste threat that can enter
play with whatever mana is available and only
one Green for color dedication this is an easy
first pick in Booster and automatic inclusion
for any Green using deck in Sealed.
Mistcutter Hydra is one of the many new Hydras
in the MTG library. Let me start off by saying
any creature that cannot be countered is welcome
in my home! Mistcutter Hydra also has protection
from blue and haste! Mono-Blue decks will have a
new enemy to fear. Let’s talk about Mistcutter
Hydra versus other colors. Well to be honest it
is just another creature against other colors,
but it has haste. The haste factor makes this
Hydra more than a sideboard card. Speed kills in
Magic the Gathering. Mistcutter Hydra can
provide that speed and it also works well with
Battalion creatures and Kalonian Hydra. (Of
course)
