So, this is one of those "Counterspell
variants that has a drawback or a restriction
and is thus perfectly balanced" that we usually
get once a block or so. I have a problem with
that line of thinking, mainly because they've
done all sorts of things in recent sets to
encourage people to play creatures. What
percentage of spells relevant to constructed
tournaments are creatures nowadays? 50%? 60%?
Higher? If the problem (or good thing, depending
on your point of view) with Counterspell was
that it could counter any relevant spell, what
should we make of a variant that can counter any
example of the most relevant class of spell in
an environment?
But hey, at least it's not as ridiculous as
Thassa's Rebuff.

Today's card of the day is Nullify which is a
two mana Blue instant that counters target
creature or aura spell. This is better than
Essence Scatter in a mono-Blue deck, though just
adding auras as a target may not be enough to
overcome the double Blue in any multicolor
builds.
Depending on the design this could be main or
sidedecked in response to the growing popularity
of auras in local metagames and overall is a
solid addition to the control toolkit.
In Limited the double Blue is a bit of a
drawback that requires a primarily Blue design
to use effectively, but countering the majority
of key cards in the set more than makes up for
it. Even as a common it is a strong second or
third choice in Booster and multiple copies are
a compelling motivation for running Blue in
Sealed.
