I'm sure there's going to be a lot of debate
about this card compared to Ultimate Price from
yesterday. This is actually much easier to find
a target for in constructed - there aren't
always as many flying creatures in those
settings than you might expect - but most people
will be wary of a nearly-universal kill spell
that can nonetheless be "countered" by Giant
Growth. But there are a surprising number of
creatures that get Roasted with no recourse, and
it's good to see diversity in the design of
spells like this.
Today's card of the day is Roast which is a two
mana Red sorcery that deals five damage to
target creature without Flying. This has
two limitations, in not working against Flying
and not being an instant, but it is still one of
the best Red removal spells in recent memory.
This will absolutely see a great deal of play in
current formats, including Commander, and is
easily supported with an instant speed burn for
any Flying or Haste threats.
In Limited this is a potential first pick in
Booster as a huge source of removal that can
destroy nearly anything that isn't a dragon in
the block or the handful of low power high
toughness creatures. An automatic
inclusion when running Red in Sealed and well
worth splashing in to add solid removal.
Yesterday’s card was a 2 mana instant that would
kill most creatures. Today, we have a 2 mana
sorcery that will kill most creatures. Clearly,
being a sorcery is a drawback here, especially
with all the haste and/or dash creatures out
there. There will also be some creatures with 6+
toughness that this won’t kill.
Even with those limitations, 2 mana to kill a
creature is pretty strong. In a constructed
mono-red deck, it’s a pretty good play, though
there will be a fair number of times when an
opponent has no creatures or only ones with
flying. In limited, it’s an easy 2nd pick.
