This is a typically-green take on card drawing
that we have seen in general form a number of
times, and it stands out from many recent card
drawing effects (in any color) by going further
into your deck and skipping at least one step by
putting creatures directly into play. That has
to count as at least another plus two or three
to the card advantage count, and possibly more
when you look at the sort of creatures that cost
three or less - Eternal Witness is still in all
the best formats!
The number four card of the year is Collected
Company which is a four mana Green instant which
can be a huge boon for a lower casting cost
aggressive Green build. Two extra
creatures, including options like Deathmist
Raptor, can turn around most major attacks from
an opponent.
It can also accelerate out tribal creatures or
other swarm tactics at a very low mana cost for
the card advantage, potentially reaching six
mana of creatures for only four and with some
choice in what gets played. In the right
deck this is an excellent card accelerator for a
color without many similar options and one that
belongs in many decks.
In a Limited format the increased average mana
curve for creatures weakens it somewhat, but
designing around it can be worthwhile with
another color in the mix. A solid first
pick in Booster if supported and a strong splash
in Sealed if Green can add a few other cards of
value.
It's neat for standard, but then lots of stuff
that was neat for standard didn't translate well
to other formats. It still has its uses, but I
wasn't overly wowed by this, considering how
luck-based it really is.
