Today's card of the day is Dromoka, the Eternal
which is a five mana Green and White 5/5 with
Flying that gives two +1/+1 counters to your
lowest toughness creature whenever a dragon
attacks. With multiple dragons this is a
very powerful effect that can can be a serious
threat with evasive targets dealing additional
damage as well as being more difficult to
remove. Even by itself it becomes a 7/7 on
the attack then a 9/9 the following turn which
is easily a game ending situation.
Overall this is a very solid card that will be
very popular in Commander at least and if
Green/White dragons were to somehow become a
viable deck this would be a staple.
In Limited this is an excellent first pick in
Booster that is an efficient 5/5 for five with
evasion and powers up your field with every
attack. There is no real drawback aside
from locking you into two colors which is
mitigated by Green generally being the best for
color fixing and acceleration. In Sealed
it of course depends on the pool, but splashing
White or Green when using the other is well
worth it to allow this to lead any offensive.
In hindsight, I probably should have expected a
set like Tarkir that focuses on Sarkhan to have
new legendary dragons. Shame on me. Dromoka here
is certainly eye-catching and, on paper, more
than worthy of the legendary creature type and
the mana cost. The five-cost slot for green and
for white (even for green/white multicolor) is
getting pretty crowded, but her support for a
major theme in those colors puts her near the
top of that list based on synergy. I'm also
intrigued by the fact that her ability triggers
when any dragon attacks - does this imply more
dragons in these colors in the near future?
