I don't know whether Ugin lives up to your
expectations, as set by the past hints like
Ghostfire and Eye of Ugin. I do know, however,
that he is hard for most decks to beat - how
many decks don't need colored permanents?
Ravager Affinity and Eldrazi Ramp spring to
mind, but beyond that? That huge loyalty means
you need a card like Banishing Light or
Bramblecrush, and the fact that he's colorless
means that his caster isn't locked into a single
set of protective or countermeasure cards.
I'm also intrigued by the fact that he seems to
be intended as a good-aligned (or at least not
evil-aligned) mechanical counterpart to Nicol
Bolas. I can't help but feel like that may be
important someday.
Welcome back readers today's card of the day is
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon one of the most
anticipated cards from this set, Ugin is a
powerful colorless planeswalker that can provide
a tremendous advantage. The +2 allows you to
deal with with smaller sized creatures and chunk
a players life total, the minus X is a powerful
board wipe which allows you to sweep the board
of colored permanents this is one of the most
powerful abilities and can single handily allow
you to dominate the board. The ultimate is sheer
card advantage and should end the game in quick
order. In standard this card will definitely see
some play its mana cost is high but the effects
are amazing. In modern this card I see will be a
superstar in Tron decks able to power it out
quickly. In legacy and vintage this card has a
high mana cost but could see some fringe play.
In casual and multiplayer this card can sweep
making it quite powerful and can allow it to
build up again. In limited it can single handily
win a game, Overall Ugin is powerful and worth
the hype.
Today's card of the day is Ugin, the Spirit
Dragon which is an eight mana colorless
planeswalker with seven loyalty. The +2
deals three damage to target creature or player,
which is always useful and with two uses sets up
the ultimate with one loyalty left over.
The -X exiles each colored permanent with a
coverted mana cost of X which is excellent
against tokens, by not reducing loyalty, and can
also work against some swarms efficiently when
the +2 isn't enough. The -10 has you gain
seven life, draw seven cards, then put up to
seven permanents from your hand into the
battlefield. That is an effect that should
always win games and can be combined with many
enters play effects or even alongside Eldrazi in
a colorless Locus deck. Overall this is a very
solid card despite the high casting cost and
with some acceleration should be a popular card
for quite some time.
In Limited this is likely the best card to open
in Sealed as it can go in any deck and both the
first and final effects are dominant in the
format. There is no reason to pass this in
Booster as it will work for any build and also
has very high value as a rare draft. The mana
cost is a little high, but the format is slower
and with a slightly above average land ratio in
the build it should be manageable.
