This may not be a modal spell per se, but I do
like how many different uses you can wring out
of such a simple effect. Giving one of your
creatures evasion is always good value, but you
may occasionally find yourself destroying Armor
of Thorns or Call to Serve as though you had a
black version of Disenchant. Sometimes even
using it just to draw a card is an acceptable
play. And this is by far my favorite way of
"countering" Coalition Victory!
Welcome back readers today's card of the day is
very niche and at the very least draws you a
card. Aphotic Wisps for a single mana grants a
creature fear and turns them black. The color
shifting is rarely relevant though it combine
with the fear granting evasion. The card draw
and combo potential is the reason to use this
card could see play being able to use a single
mana to cycle through cards could lead to
something in a combo deck as you want to
assemble your pieces fast enough. It also can
shut down tons of removal spell that work on
creatures being non black. In constructed
formats this card is not quite good enough even
in its niche use to score it highly. In casual
and multiplayer formats its a one time evasion
granter and although it draws you a card its
worse then even enchantments and equipment
making it generally underwhelming. In limited
its grade A filler if your looking to get
aggressive this could be a contender but its
quite a ways down the ladder. Overall a card
with a small niche but cantrips and replacing
the spell you cast can be powerful.
Today's card of the day is Aphotic Wisps which
is a one mana Black instant that makes target
creature Black, gives it Fear and you draw a
card. The cantrip nature of drawing a card
makes this worth considering as for one mana it
can add evasion or very situational protection.
Overall a decent card for support and even
though it isn't dramatically impressive it has
little drawback as it thins a deck and offers a
reasonable temporary boost.
For those of you not in the know, I absolutely
abhor spells that require you to have creatures
on the board. Getting them off is situational,
and makes that target creature a magnet for kill
spells. There's such better picks on making
creatures unblockable that this card just
shouldn't be. the fact that it's a cantrip
helps, but not enough.
