Today's card of the day is Deathmist Raptor
which is a three mana Green
3/3 with Deathtouch, Megamorph for five, and
whenever a permanent you control is turned face
up you may return the Raptor from grave to the
battlefield face up or face down. A three
mana 3/3 with Deathtouch and a revive effect is
very solid and will definitely see play in
current formats, though the Megamorph cost of
two extra mana is a bit more situational and
less likely to be used. Supported with
other Morph cards, Den Protector in particular,
this has quite a bit of potential card advantage
and may become a viable competitive build.
In Limited this is a strong first pick in
Booster as an efficient 3/3 with a combat effect
and the revive option is very useful and easily
supported in the format. In Sealed the
double Green could be a minor drawback, though
if splashed the Megamorph cost only requires one
Green.
From what I've seen (I haven't yet done
exhaustive testing by any means), the Tarkir
block's morphs don't quite have the Exalted
Angel problem where there's one card that's far
and away the most likely to be seen face down on
a battlefield. As such, I think there's a good
chance of making a deck that turns Deathmist
Raptor into an unkillable monstrosity while not
relying on cards you wouldn't be playing
otherwise. Of course, you could always just use
it as a 3/3 with deathtouch for three mana,
which is very, very strong in itself - the fact
that the Raptor has facets beyond that makes it
simply amazing.
Meet my newest addition to green devotion. Early
game, he’s a 3/3 with deathtouch for 3 mana.
Right on curve, and is annoying to block or
attack into, whatever your situation might be.
Later in the game, play him with his Megamorph
(one of the worst mechanic names ever) ability
and make him a little bigger. Then, flip
Rattleclaw Mystic or a manifest created by
Whisperwood Elemental, and bring him right back!
It’s cheap, it’s versatile, it’s resilient…it’s
effective.
